Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 37ford4dr, Oct 11, 2011.

  1. my buddy is selling his open car trailer that he used for moving his race car around. he wants $500 for it has dual 3500 lb axles, electric brakes on one axle, one axle he just replaced last year, full 2x6 decking, full size 18' long ,usual wear and tear on fenders with a steel tire rack for 8 tires.,currently weighs about 1800 lbs. its about 12 yrs old.

seems like a good buy to me and must be close to the bottom price to pay for a car trailer.....what do you guys think? any body see one priced lower? thks bob

id go for it, you cant even buy a good set of 3500lbs axle for 500

  7. Is this getting to be just a p***ive way of showing off? Why do 99% percent of the "hey is it worth it" threads end up being deals that are as obvious as the nose on your face. Buy it and tell us about it later, you already know it's a good deal.

Before you buy, check with your state inspection laws. Some states require trailer brakes on BOTH axles (in Pa. they do). If your state requires it, you will most likely have to remove the existing brakes and start all over. That could get expensive. $500 is a great price but be careful!! Best of luck!!

  14. well the above post is why i asked the question, sometimes the guys that have them have a perspective from years of ownership that i don't have. I will check the VA DMV and see if there are inspection requirements. thks bob

I bought one like that at a swap meet for $400 bucks, that was 18 yrs ago and were still running the wheels off fo her. It's nice to have because you can lend it out and never worry about the darn thing ....lol

Paid $1800 for something comparable, though mine has four-wheel brakes.

Heck most pieces of **** homemade trailers are priced higher than that. Get while you can and go from there. Just make sure you can register it legaly.

  24. I will say this right up front , I know nothing about trailers....i have determined that VA DMV requires a state inspection annually on trailers over GVW 3500#s and requires brakes....and i like to have my stuff legal.....so i am looking at correcting the missing electric brakes on the one axle. I have googled some electric brakes on line and is fixing this, as simple as changing the backing plate and adding the brake drum to the existing axle so its like $65 for the drum and $40 for the electric brake ***embly per side. or am i missing something? i ***ume the parts would have to be compatible with the existing axle manufacture and spindle size. thks bob

If this trailer is older than say 12 years or so, I believe it was only required to have brakes on one axle in VA - so, brakes on all 4 wheels will depend on its year of manufacture.

I've borrowed, bought, used, and sold car trailers - the one I borrowed had brakes on only one axle, the one I bought had it on all 4 - both were legal in VA.

So, buy the trailer and as long as you have the proper, old reggie/***le and such, brakes on one axle are probably just fine.

AZ law says it needs brakes on all axles, of course mine had none when I got it, and I've only added one set. One of these days I'll put the rest of the brakes on it.

Check the laws, but even so buying a pair of brakes is relatively inexpensive.
