hi everyone i have been finishing up with the new frontend and steering on my g***er. it a 1964 ford f 100 set up heavy duty stock straight axle. when i picked this thing up at the junk yard and brung it home cleaned it up and i installed it, and used the stock draglink and steering box and colom. every thing is installed now looks nice untill tonite it never accured to me to turn the wheels like a dumb *** it is lock tryed banging on spindels but still stuck im thinkin it was sitting in water or somthing befor and king pins are stuck, doses anyone have any suggestion on what else to do before ii start rippin this apart? any body feel free im open for suggestions
Soak them down with some Kroil or another penetrating oil. Might even try a bit of heat on the king pin boss. One you get them free just work it back and forth and see if it steers smooth.
It's an I beam. Straight axles dont have the upturns on the ends to lower ride height. What you are thinking of are twin ibeam's. Argue less, read more. As far as your issue, I would try also pumping some grease into the grease fittings along with soaking it. I would also pull the drums off the hubs and try some not so gentle persuasion with a dead blow hammer to get it moving by hitting the hub sides. if it still wont budge, order a king pin kit and drop it all off at the machine shop to have them replaced as the king pins are junk anyways. I am all about doing stuff on the cheap but safety is paramount.
i hear that ,and also thank you, i will also try that. straight axle ,i beam same **** basicly kingpins are stuck. and yes i was thinkin of twin i beams
I have also had success taking the zerk fittings out and pumping in a 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF to dissolve the old grease and corrosion. I'll warn you in advance that it isn't an instant cure, but with patience, it can free up the worst of them! Sent from my iPhone using TJJ!!!
