I got a T-bucket that im building in a 60s style dragstrip style (look for the 60s style t-bucket thread). I always wanted a Tunnel Ram for it because its so fuckin cool BUT can you run a Tunnel Ram on the street? I got a nearly stock 327. Anyone out there with a "standard" chevy smallblock thats running a tunnel ram? Im going for a single carb intake and my Edelbrock 600.
I ran a tunnel ram on a super mild 64 283, 2 Holley 390 vacuum carbs. Ran great and had power down low. That only lasted about a month when the cops banned me from running it on the streets, then back to a single carb and a low rise manifold. Thanks pigs!
I got a Edelbrock 600 now and im gonna use that and go for a single card tunnel ram,got a edelbrock preformer intake now. As you can se my bucket needs a Tunnel Ram! (yeah,i know the sidepipes are lame)
Tunnel rams rule because they represent a max effort engine. Putting one on a stock 327 is akin to a hollowed out blower IMO. Get some cam and compression and you'll be the real deal instead of just posing. Good luck! PS- cool car!
I've run plenty of multiple carbs on the street. I've actualy have better suscess with 600 holley's than 390's, and I've never run a pari of 450's. You'll need to restrict the idle circuits and a decent ignition system. I've got a crossram on my 65, which is a stock 327/350hp L79. 327 came in lots of hp configurations. I'm not gonna say TR on all stock 327 are poserish, but if it's a later 2 brl motor with just TR, you might want to give it a little cam.
actually you should check out one of my threads! haha had a pretty go argument going back and forth between single carb and tunnel ram setups however it was leaned more towards the performance end. but check out this read from car craft if you want. its tunnel ram vs single quad http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/0304_intake_manifolds_contrast/index.html my 57 chevy has a tunnel ram on it with 2 450 holleys but its got a pretty lumpy cam and 10.5:1's too but it pulls great on the street. smokes the tires from a stand still in 2nd gear no problem! PxTx had me start another thread on how to maximize my performance and how to tune the multi carbs http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=400992 no ones responded yet but stay tuned cuz it should get interesting! good luck and i say stick with the looks especially with the tbucket! cool looking ride
Well i think i got a little bit funnier cam in my 327,i dont know for sure but it sounds way more mean than the old 305 i had before the 327. And when you drive it and get the rpm up you feel that you get a push at a special rpm. The heads are some lame 1972 76cc but i want some camel hump heads instead. So it aint all for the looks,i want some go to The block is 67 camaro 327 some low hp model aboute 200hp,so i think if i change the heads to some 60cc "real" 327 heads i will get some more boost. (yep,i have changed the steering wheel ha ha)
Just a note that tunnel rams are really more of a 70s thing than a 60s thing. Tunnel rams really didn't get popular intil the last year or 2 of the 10 year decade of the 60s. A more 60s look would be dual quads in line or side by side. If you want the 70s look, a tunnel ram is more proper. either way, enjoy. Steve
my tunnel ram is an edelbrock from the 60's and has an oil fill tube? i was under the impression that this was a sign of a mid to early 60's intake
I think the early Edelbrocks had a LOT bigger plenium on them than what you have. Looked like a shoebox under the carbs. Does it have a part number or series on it? Larry T
Yea, but that's not a TR 1. And, it's just an opinion, but I think the T would look great with 3X2's on it. Larry T
Get yourself an Edelbrock "Street" Tunnel Ram (#7110) with a couple of the Holley 390's or the 450's, we had great luck with one we put on a friends car and his was a 327 with a mild cam. http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/mc/manifolds/chevy/multiple_carbs-sb.shtml
Sure you can. Hell almost 2/3 of all Tbuckets have tunnel rams on them! You can even get one for a single 4bbl as well as duals.
and come to think about it. what do you care about torque anyway! youre in a t bucket! it only weighs like 1500 lbs! run the tunnel ram. but go dual quad^ although hes right you can get the single quad tunnel ram, i really dont like the look of them at all. nothing beats the look of 2x4's. unless its a combination of deuces!
Hell yes you can run them on the street! I will be running this set up soon. Old TR1Y for SBC with 600 Holley. One carb, good response, good power and less fuss! 21" High Baby, oh yeah. If your going to have your motor sticking out I say go big!
have posted this on other tunnelram threads........... have only been running tunnel rams for years...got one before available to public........... using 3barrel holly/2x450/2x660...all where made to work perfect..... two hollys on early style [still made]...in falcon an real deal backinday gasser........
I have a tunnel ram with a single Holley on a 327 in my 36 sedan right now. It runs like crap, but to be fair the car has sat around for a lot of years and had very little use. So I can't really say how good it is or not. I don't like it, it was installed during a 70's build when the 327 was built with 11.5 compression. I'm removing the tunnel ram and the 327 and will be selling it. Going with a new crate 350 with performer and 650 Edelbrock.
My T in the 70's would lift the front wheels on launch, added a tunnel ram with a pair of small holly's (465's I think) killed the bottom end enough to keep the wheels on the ground and added 1500 rpm on the top end where I could use it. win win situation for me at the time. I should add I don't think it would have worked the same on a car over 1500 lbs
I put a tunnel ram on my fairly stock 327 this spring, and have put over 3,000 street miles on it this summer. I'm running dual 500cfm Holleys, and it works very nicely once I changed the accelerator pumps to 50's and the nozzles to larger. I get nearly 16 mpg on the highway at 55-60 mph, with 3.73 gears.
