I have all the parts to do a cross steering setup on my 32 frame with a sbc in it. No wonder if i can go with only one steering joint or if i need 2 of them? If i need 2 what kind of steeringsetups i can go with one ?. I think this joints everywhere looking a kind of bad. I know f100 and f 1 need no joint what i would love but they are heavy to get here in europe.
I have installed many Vega Boxes - you will need 2 joints on any Vega cross steer. I would get either Borgeson or Flaming River joints. Probably some Alliance Vendors on here.
I set up our 32 with a Vega box and used 2 joints like hotroddon says above. The system works great with no bump steer, etc. Doing this, we were able to position the steering wheel just where we wanted it...
Ive got a Vega box in my '32 Pickup and I also had to use 2 universals. The joint at the box is pretty well hidden by the motor mount and I was able to run the upper joint inside the firewall. I then used a dummy column tube to disguise the 3/4" shaft as it came thru the firewall.
On my 32, I reshaped the pittman arm. It is forged steel so bending it is just like bending Ford spindle arms. I reversed the shape. It now bends up next to the sector shaft as much as it did bend down. The tie rod end is reversd as well. I also reversed the tie rod hole taper so the tie rod come in on the top. All this allows the box to be mounted with a ptetty big down slope. This helps with the clearance and also the joints. With a hemi up front, I only have one joint plus a rag joint so loads/vibration up the shaft would be less.
I've built three cars with Vega boxes. They all have just one u-joint at the box. But, none have sbc engines.
If you are building a traditional car I hardly think a Vega box has its place on it. Be more creative and use one of the multitude of steering setups used before 1971. If you are building a street rod go ahead and put rack and pinion on it.
so school me on the traditional setups? One idea was f1/f100 but hard to find. What else would work for a traditional setup, that is affrordable?
In Europe you might be able to find a period Burman recirculating-ball steering box quite easily. They were fitted to many British cars but also to a number of Continental ones (e.g. Alfa Romeo). They date from before WWII.
