If I got a $100 part I'm trying to sell, and I need the cash and here you come trying to trade me something for it, what you're bringin to the table should be worth more than $100. Cause if I wanted a trade I would have noted it in the sale.

That's the way I look at it.

i think people's "trade" prices are higher is because they expect that you increased the price on your car, therefore, the price could be negotiated against and you'll get what you actually want. Therefore, they raise the price on their own car because they expect you to also negotiate on what it's worth.

I'm not sure if this makes sense.

  5. have ya seen the cartoon where two guys walking away from a deal they just did each with the caption bubble over each head "i screwed that guy he got **** !"

unless both parties can agree its gonna create questions to an on looker..

And if you sold the car for $3800 and bought a 3800 Toyota (why aren't you buying American?:D) then you'd still have to spend the $500. In fact if you trade for a 4200 car, you are going to spend more in taxes and registration!

BINGO - I think that in a trade, both parties tend to bump the "Value" of their car to make the trade more appealing - I've seen this many times. But I have never seen anyone so bold as to make an ad say $10,000 or trade for $15,000 worth of your junk. I would just turn and walk away from that one!

I've bought and sold lots of cars over the years. In my estimation all the cars I've had for sale were decent and desirable. I never get involved with anything odd ball that will be hard to sell. What I mean by that the year, make and body style are desirable.I equate old cars to houses. Always buy something you can sell if you have to. Nothing outside the main stream. The last two cars I've sold were a 46 Ford Convertible built with all the best components and a 56 Chevy Bel Air 2 door post that was a frame off with a 355, M-22 four speed. Both were exceptional cars that needed nothing. My experience with trades is the trade is always something with no real value. They want to trade it because no one would buy it. No way I'll trade for something I can't sell at a profit. Cash talks.

I think you both are. How is a guy any better off if he trades for something he doesnt want? Why do that? GMan0046 you are right on

Could this be a matter of having a lot of labor and money into something that isnt wroth that amount?

Example: say you had a solid body that you media blasted, and literally got to the point of where the only thing it needed was paint. You have about $5000 in labor (mostly) and about $1000 in parts. $6,000 invested. As is, you'll be lucky to get $2000 for it on the market.

So, in trade value, do you ask for $5K, or $2k?

How much do you ask for in terms of money?

Possibly the 15k trade could be converted to 10k cash, semi-quickly? In other words; the 15k trade becomes 10k cash via selling the 15k trade for 2/3's of it's actual value, so it should sell rather quickly at fire-sale prices....?
It would be just a way to expedite things...

I don't really do the trade thing for many of the reasons mentioned above. However, I have before. I traded a decent used car for a chainsaw, a utility trailer and a few other tools, all of which I made money with instantly.

The value of the items may or may not have worked out to be the same BUT we both got something that we wanted out of the deal and it netted me a lot more money than the cash would have sitting in my pocket. Plus, the guy got a car with money he had already spent... if that makes sense?

The hatred of value on '32 to '34 Fords

We are all over the board on this one. Maybe just one rant at a time.

I'm not hating the value, I'm just stating facts. These cars are very valuable, to the RIGHT person. If some millionaire wants to spend his cash at $80,000 a pop for a '32-'34 3-window then so be it.

To the general public, these cars are NOT worth as much as a house.... It's become a joke to normal working people. Especially when the same car can be built in steel for 1/3 of the money.

The original question asked why people think just because you don't have the cash, why would you trade your $15,000 stuff for $10,000 just because you want to trade vs. buy.

If the person asked for the trade was not interested in your offer, why not just say no.... It's like the thinking that a waiter DESERVES something because they didn't apply themselves and work towards a career that paid more than minimum wage. It's just crazy talk in my book.

That's why I asked.... To hear other peoples opinions.

When I list something for sale I usually will mention I will look at trades, I wouldn't blatently say it needs to be worth more than my car but in my mind I know it needs to be for me to do the deal. Basically for as mentioned above, I then have to deal it way. The other reason is simply to trade up to something that is worth more and maybe I will like it better and when I am done wanting it I can do it all over again. I have traded down in real money value for something I liked better, because I liked it better. That would be the truck in my Avatar. I bought a 30 Tudor and traded it for a 57 ford 300 2 door sedan, I came up about 3k in the trade then traded that for the truck which when I sold it 8 months later I dropped back down 2K. In the end I got my original investment out and it worked out fine.

The other possible reason is for some people, they realize that stuff isn't worth now what it was a few years ago, so if they paid 15k for something then, they know it won't sell for it now, and know it is only worth 10k cash, but if they trade they want to keep it even in their mind.

I do not know where this is coming from :(

Most any person interested in old cars KNOWS that the 32/33/34 Fords bring the money. Can all of all afford a 80 grand coupe ?? I certainly know I cannot buy one. I might could build one ... over a 3 to 5 year period.

As for 1/3 the cost to build a new one. The cheapest Brookville is 10 grand for a body ( roadster ) and 25 grand for a coupe.

I see a lot of high $$$ bashing on this board. Why should I be upset that someone like 3WLarry can spent wheel barrows of money on his dream ?? LOOKS like money well spent to me ..

Sooooo if I decide to someday sell my 32 for $75,000 I should agree to trade for something in the $100,000 range?!?!? Sorry I couldn't resist.
