What rod? The overdrive i used in my 63 was from an 84 ltd. Ithad a cable (like a kickdown cable) that adjusted at the carb. Move it one way or the other, it shifted sooner or later. No electronics. Maybe im confused as to how they actually work, is that just a kickdown cable? I thought the cable adjustment was a line pressure adjustment to tell it when to upshift/downshift, or am i understanding this wrong?
Also, what exhaust manifolds u using? I had 96 explorer manifolds (look like headers) that were perfect fit. We tried early mustang manifolds, but they hit the crossmember. When i say "we"" my brother built the car, i bought it from him and swapped a bunch of stuff around. Not tryin to take credit for his work, i made many changes, but actual builder wasnt me

Nice to see Marty got his A back on the road. Hard to imagine your big ol' Ford powered by just a 6 cyl. Now it's going to perform the way you really wanted it to. Good luck.

The AODs used in the Crown Vic up to 85 (86?) have a rod that runs down to the ****** like the older ******s do.

Yeah, that much iron isn't easy to stop! Make sure the emergency brake works.

We don't have many of those left in Wisconsin. I towed a few in the 70s. The frame would rust out and when it sagged, the parking brake cables would tighten up and stop the car.

It was a super easy swap. The hardest thing was fabing a new ****** cross member. Let me know if you need a sbf engine mount crossmember I have one from summit that I haven't sent back yet

I was originally gonna put a 302 roller motor in my car but I drove a 66 mustang
With one and didn't think I was gonna be happy after I put one in my car so I bought a 390 out of a police interceptor galaxie

Yeah I can't wait to get it finished up and take it out but I never realized how expensive fe motors are to build until you start building one!

Just one question? The '77 Mustang 302 had a 28oz balance the AOD cars after 1980 have a 50oz balance did you also get a 28oz flexplate from Summit while you were at it? If not you will have a nasty vibration and a short engine life.

  20. Jeff is correct. Also the AOD ran up to 90 or 91, before they went electronic. Like most things, as the years went on, they fixed all the issues they had along the way. That being said, most info I have read, points toward an 89 and up being a all around better built trans.

Best of luck and be sure to keep the throttle pressure cable/rod adjusted properly or get used to pulling the trans. Trust me on that one!

Actually best AOD is from 1988-93 these have all the reliably upgrades and are still non-computer, Mustang and Cougar AOD's are about 1 1/4" shorter than the full size AOD's there are a few beefier parts in the AOD's from Police Crown Vics.If you are going with a Carb you should use the LOKAR TV cable as it will save you a lot of problems and is an EZ install,AOD TV cable adjustment is critical you can fry a trans in about 10 minutes if it's wrong.
