Cant help with the clothes, but unless you really like driving, I would skip Elpaso and just stay around Austin, San Antonio and Dfw. Plenty to do in those three towns with out driving 8 + hours to Elpaso.

This one is just a short drive north of Dallas. It is more of a costume shop, but they have a very large inventory.

There is another very large store on South Congress in Austin. A bit of a tourist attraction but again a very large inventory. As a plus it is in an area with a lot of funky stores, so there should be something for you there. A similar area in Dallas would be Deep Ellum.

If you make it to Plano for the Vintage Dallas store give me a call and I'll buy lunch. (PM me for number.)

My wife and daughter really like Bon Ton Vintage in Forreston. It is a couple miles off of I-35 south of Waxahachie. Very nice couple run the place.

Not sure it is worth the h***le but Style Station between West and Waco always has tons of vintage cloths and stuff. Do not talk politics with Art the owner. He appears to be an angry, old hippy.

There are other places in Dallas. I'll ask the wife.

When will you be in Dallas? You should consider the State Fair. It runs through Oct 23.

The vintage shop in plano is a good place, car museum in Richardson isn't half bad either.

If you have time come over we'll show you around the shop.

Good advice re: avoiding El Paso. There's a good thrift shot with Vintage Clothes on South Congress a couple blocks up from the Continental Club in Austin and another on Guadalupe up near University of Tex campus called Buffalo Exchange. A bunch on South Lamar including Texas Custom boots on the corner of South Lamar and Oltorf, which has great used cowboys boots galore. You're going to love Austin!

I am no help on the vintage shops.

***uming you are arriving in Dallas, I can only think of two reasons that a person from the UK would want to travel to El Paso and of the two, the LONG wide open drive is the only one that is legal (boring).

no offense to the El Paso Hambers - even they don't just jump in their car for a leisurely drive to and from DFW.

wow - hate to jump on the bash el paso band wagon but......unless you have a real reason to go I would skip it. that is a LONG drive.

Big Bend might be a little - tiny bit closer and you will see "movie" Texas and the weather in Big Bend is pretty nice in October.

I'd have to agree with Chainsaw, El Paso is 576 miles west of Austin with very little in between except a couple of notorious speed traps. That is a long hard day driving out and a long hard day driving back.

I'd concentrate on hitting the towns on the I 35 corridor with side trips though the Texas Hill country. There some great two lane roads and the smaller towns have a lot to offer along the way.

Rather than Elpaso I'd hit San Antonio with a side trip to Fredricksburg and back to Austin through the Hill country. Texas is huge as compared to anywhere else and what looks like a short trip on a map may take all day or more than one day to do.

My wife grew up in MCGregor, Tx which is outside of Waco and we spent the first eight years we were married there before moving back up here.

You could hit the Brazos drive in theater in Granbury ,about an hour south west of Dallas.

  18. All kinds of unique clothing stores on Congress and sixth street in Austin. Stay away from the border towns. San Antonio is great with The River Walk, Mexican shops there have everything you'd find in Mexico except the crime and filth. Hill country between the two cities is a must and the cuisine is great! Welcome to Texas and have a ball!

Wife met me in Austin for Lonestar Round Up. She would say Room Service in Austin may be one of the best vintage stores in the USA. There are a weeks worth of vintage stores shoping in Austin(Clothes, shoes, furniture,dishes,toys-ask me how I know). Get away from tourist areas and see the real local stores. Lots of good old music stuff in Austin if your into it. If you do do Congress Ave hit the pawn shops on the other end away from tourist areas they had lots of good tools and musical instuments. I hear Houston has good vintage stores but havent been there in awhile.

No reason to go to El Paso. As the others have said, Austin is enough for that sort of thing. I guess the farthest from there that a person might go would be to Jefferson, TX, and even that historically great antiquing town is probabl no more worth the trip than what you'd find in the general Austin-San Antonio area.

Canton First Monday flea market east of Dallas. None bigger.

  24. there is a block of small towns east of austin that are totally dedicated to antique stuff. Round Top. Carmine.LaGrange.etc. Check out Round Top Register (a local paper dedicated to this that is online). enjoy your trip. Oh, yea, I lived in Western Texas for forty years and unless you just want to see the scenery between El Paso and the rest, it is pretty much a two day drive out and back and a lousy plane ride.

Visit the Stockyards and Sundance Square in Fort Worth. Avoid Dallas.

Hey everyone some great help there thanks. We thought of going to elpaso to see a big wholesale store that sells some really cool mexican blankets and bags, but maybe we will give it a miss. The store looks huge, we are due to leave here on the 27 oct my partners mother lives near Marshal, so all of the surrounding area will be covered thanks again Terry and Leanne

I have visited El Paso couple of times. I haven't seen anything vintage be it old cars or architecture. It may hide somewhere though if you dig deeper I don't know. For me it is just a big city with some mexican mixed atmosphere. El Pasoans here guide us please.

I have visited that big rug store you mentioned and found it sells cheap import copies instead of real mexican and native indian handmade products.

If your partmers Mother lives near Marshall,Jefferson is only 15 miles N on 59...for a town of only 2100 population, there are 20-30 Antiques stores and many Antebelum homes open for tours...many Bed and Breakfast places to stay in...Jefferson is highly reccommended .
