I'm thinking of straight piping my truck has anyone done straight pipes on a 350? If so is it obnoxious or does it have a good sound.
No, no one has ever had straight pipes on a 350 Chevy. This should help: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=350+chevy+straight+pipes&aq=f
Very funny. I know people have done it I'm just asking how the sound is and if it requires baffles of if it still has enough back pressure
Im running straights on my 406 small block. you will be a moving target for all cops. Some will argue with or against this but you can always put in cut-outs.
The truth is...STRAIGHT pipes sound like **** without some sort of baffle. However, I ran BENT pipes with no mufflers or baffles, and it sounded great...not obnoxious at all. The trick I learned from my favorite muffler shop was ...use several bends in the system...it worked great. Go to youtube and type Larry Roller in the search box and you'll be able to see and hear my black 3w coupe's motor running.
Your car sounds amazing I'm heading to the garage right now to re do my exhaust. Thanks for the info I appreciate it
I think it will sound like a beater car. I'd at LEAST do some Dynomax bullet mufflers: http://www.jegs.com/i/Dynomax/289/24236/10002/-1 I was running some old turbo mufflers that sounded lame, and swapped on 2.5 duals and 2 chamber flows. I can really hear my cam now too.
Straight pipe a small block chevy?? What a pioneer, man your crazy!!! Can you say uncharted waters?? get a life
Have you ever heard a demo car running? Sounds like a disaster unless it has a nasty big cam, and alot of money poured into it, think a dragster. Taking your 350 and slamming straight pipes on it will be obnoxious, but I don't know what you are looking for. Maybe you could get that really cool cackle like all of the high school redneck kids get with their body lifted 4x4 trucks and no mufflers....
You guys are funny. OP: It'll be annoyingly loud. Scare children loud. Frighten the elderly loud. Put another way. It's really hard to talk your way out of an 'unnecessary noise" ticket using sign language.
To give you honest advice on your question(s)... I wouldn't do straight pipes if I were you, but its your car. I will suggest some flow through mufflers like gl***packs... Trust me you are going to get over straight pipes in a hurry. I had gl***packs on my Plymouth and the MG Midget I owned you get tired of hearing loss and having to crank up the radio to overcome the exhaust even over them. Do what you want though, but think of the material you will have to use and how much time you will have in walking the pipes back and forth rather than just getting a straight shot with a cheap muffler (thrush welded $30 for each muffler, which are the same design as flowmasters). AND you will be a target from cops, I am with gl***packs on the '40 Plymouth. They tell me I am running straight pipes and I tell them to get on their knees and look at the gl***pack, then they leave me alone. Just my two cents though
It will sound like ****, but that's my opinion. Throw the smallest gl***packs you can. Find towards the front of the system. Then it will be loud, cheap, and not as gay as straights. Its ur ride though, do what you want.
It's going to get old after a day or two, and most likely sound exactly like a car in any muffler commercial. Very few can pull it off well. Try it and see, if you don't like it you can always put mufflers in it.
The only straight pipes that I ever liked are 2 inches or smaller and cackle like hell but other than that most just make it sound like a cop attracting redneck beater. I like good tone or cackle not alot else. if you plan on running straights be prepared to have a good stereo to drown the out at 55 if you dont want to listen to it or live with the drone that you will always hate after about 15 min.
i have done it,dropped a 350/400hp sbc into a 70 impala and my break in road test requirement is no hood/open headers just after dark. my neighbours loved me.... i have since moved further out of town..... then theres my 87 chev that the muffler fell off,the two sound completely different. i would never consider that for anything i drive on a regular basis.
i cut the muffler out today so i could redo my exhaust system, i started it and i didnt like the sound of straight pipes. anyone have advice for what is a good sounding muffler to put in it?
It's your truck. Do it. If you don't like it, change it. If you do like it then f*** everyone else. Simple.
One of my beaters the muffler fell off on me on the highway and I just grabbed it and went on to where I had to be. It was a gl*** pack cobbed on behind the converter on it. Anyways, #1 the loud drone of the exhaust going down the highway gave me a headache, and #2 the 350 preferred the backpressure - it actually got noticeably worse fuel milage. Which wasn't great in a Suburban to begin with. Before I left to come home I went to the parts store and bought enough pieces to cob it back on right there in the parking lot. While your milage may vary I'd expect the same thing, except perhaps the drone may be less of an issue if you run pipes all the way out the back.
Dude, Nevermind the *****s! Of you run straight pipes. Run them all the way out the back. I dont hear anything unless I Stand on it. The only time I get pulled over are for cops to check oiut my car. My 350 has an rv cam and sounds good. Goodluck! Eddie
