Where to buy generic carpets?

Last night I pulled the seats out of my ford and removed all the black rubber mat and associated backing (most of it just chipped away and broke apart)

Anyway, I have an empty floor pan now and I want to put black carpet in there. Do you guys have a recommendation for some good (and cheap) carpet that's easy to install? I know they sell premade kits for about 200 bucks, but I'd like to go cheaper than that if possible. I want the car to look presentable, but this car isn't worth putting a whole lot of money into. I love driving it and I want to get the carpet done and the seats recovered before my wedding in October.

Could you guys list the names of any of the carpet resellers here? I can't remember the name of the place associated with JC Whitney.

Also, if it's not too hard to do, can a guy lay his own carpet and get good results using a heat gun or whatever to form the carpet to the floor?

And if so, what kind of carpet should I use? (and where to buy)

Thanks for any info. I was picking through the archives a bit and didn't see much talk of carpeting since it's more of a hotrod board.

Part of the fun in classic cars for me is giving people rides, so if I keep it presentable, I can actually get my grandparents and my fiancee to get in the thing.

A freind of mine used indoor/outdoor carpet from Homedepot. Looks good and wears like iron. (not the plastic looking crap. The stuff that looks like real carpet.)

Did he do anything special to it to get it to form fit the floor pan?

  4. Go over to your local upholstery shop and order some of that stretchy cut-pile carpet. It's cheap!

Spray a little glue, lay out the carpet and mold it in with your hands --it looks like it grew there

I bought some indoor/outdoor carpet from Lowe's. It's grey, spent a whole 20 bucks or so. Have enought to carpet the trunk area also. I have a flat floor, so my end result should be pretty good. Not sure how it would form to yours.

Looks like 160 dollars from this company for formed stuff, so I might take a stab at the 20 dollar carpet if I can find any. The ONE auto upholstry shop in town won't sell me any carpet. They said it's only for their use, and they'd be happy to put carpet in my car for 500 dollars.

They're dicks everytime I call them though.. They wanted 2600 dollars to put VINYL seat covers in my car.

I'll reiterate the Home Depot thing. They have some CHEAP black stuff that looks like what you'd expect to find in most cars. Or at least modern cars. Nice anyway.

  8. It costs less thru Jc Whintey...their site sucks to navigate though!

  9. lots of compny's out there that sell formed to fit for $80 to 125$, do a search on your puter search engine w "auto carpet", you won't beleive how many come up.:D

Ok, will do. I'm gonna borrow the fiancee's clothes measuring tape, so I can get around the curves and all that.

I am going to stop at Lowes on my way home from work, but that's the only store we have in town like that.

I got some stretchy cut-pile carpet from this place:

    http://www.upholsterysupply.com/superfle.htm

It worked out very well, and I was able to 'mold' it around the tranny hump and fender wells in the trunk-- I used it for the interior I built in my dad's '53 Stude rod, below. If you look at the trunk, it's all one piece. (Sorry for the pics' hugeness)

Cost is $21/yard, and it's 80" wide. Nice folks, too. Hope this helps...

Don't have a recomendation on carpet, but I will suggest you lay some insulation beforehand. I use a type that is kinda' like a roll of bubblewrap made out of foil. It's silver (of course) & smooth on both sides (unlike bubblewrap). I glue it in with 3M super trim adhesive & glue the carpet to it. Makes a world of difference in sound deadening & heat insulation. I bought it years ago, so not sure where to get it either. (Yeah I'm a wealth of knowledge huh?) I split an entire roll with my boss of the time & I've done several cars & still have a little left for my current projects.
