I want to put a tach in my '53 Desoto. The car has a 251 l-head six, and is still 6volt positive ground. I imagine this could take forever to find one that will work.
Thanks for that link. I found a couple, the $119 seems to be on par with other tachs I've seen for sale on ebay. This is the first verified 6 volt positive ground tach I've found. I just wish it was a little bigger than 2"
I checked out Westach as well and only saw 2" tach's. Looking for something more traditional. In a 6 Volt pos. gnd.
I've run a 6 volt westach and have had problems with it, sent it back they looked it over and still does the same thing, when off it reads 1000 revs, I just let it go.
my dad bought a new one for his 41 stude and has never used it. the car is getting converted to 12 volts anyway. i can find out what he wants for it if you like.
You might be able to run an old Sun "Half Moon" Tach, the type that used a sending unit. The 6 volt sending units usually do no go for that much money. If you dont need a high RPM tach, the ones that go to 4,000 or 5,000 RPM dont bring the premium prices.
Yeah, I don't need a high reving tach. 4grand would be plenty, the ol' L-head six doesn't like to spin that fast. Edweird, let me know buddy. I'd appreciate it.
A note on the old Sun sender "buzz" boxes: they need to be completely gone through before installed. The original hard wired batteries need to be replaced and the trigger mechanisms need to be cleaned and adjusted. Calibration also has to be fine tuned and is best performed with the tach. All this adds up to a fair amount of labor, $. There are later "V" type solid state senders that work positive and negative ground, but they are rare. If you can tolerate the Westach unit, they're a good deal. I usually recommend a mechanical tach, they are a simpler design and rarely fail, especially if serviced.
