Don't deck the block unless it really needs it, Flathead blocks are notorious for thin decks. Many machine shops do this as a matter of course, but you should check it first. It's easy to strip a head bolt thread if you're not careful. (Don't ask me how I know).

  2. Upgrade your distributor as well, one of the best mods for a flathead is good ignition.

  3. Wild Willy, What sort of ignition upgrade do you recommend? Flattys are very new to me, so I have lots to learn.

Tubman, What is the recommended limit for deck thickness. I agree the deck looks thin to start with but I typically work on late model overhead valve engines.

I finished welding up my engine dolly tonight so I will be able to move it all around the shop with ease very soon. After that I will pressure wash the outside of the motor and remove the other head for inspection.

  4. There are Mallory and MSD upgrades or you can get ahold of GMCBubba on here and get one of his conversions. Supposedly a great upgrade from what everyone says, I will be running one in mine when I get to that point.

  5. Thought you might like to see some pics of the flat head.

    Enjoy!

  6. I have been doing allot of research. Reading everything that I can about the noble Flathead engine. I would realy appreciate a little advise from experience here. First off I am planing a near stock rebuild that will include a mild performance cam, metal cam gear and adjustable lifters as well as hardened seats and stainless steel valves. I am planing on using my origonal iron heads and 2 barrel intake with a "Y" adapter to run a pair of Ford 2bbl carbs. I am going to run the stock exhaust manifolds. For ignition I am going to rework a Chevy V8 breaker points distributor.

    My questions are:

    1. This motor came with truck style water pumps. Should I stick with these or switch to something else? Where would I get them? I am planing to run the wide belt.

    2. Anyone ever modified the Chevy distributor for this purpose? What weights and springs should I use or will I have to take it to a shop with a distributor machine and have it professionally set up?

    3. I would like to modify the oil filtration system for full filtering, but still use the origonal style filter. Anyone ever done this? Pictures and descriptions appreciated.

    4. I read there was a difference in the lifter bore angle in early and late model engines but not all cam manufacturers recognize this. Anyone know for sure what cams are good or bad in this respect?

    Thanks!

    Mike
