Here are some pictures taken last Saturday at the reunion. About 32 cars showed up. What a sweet sound when they fired them up all at once. My three year old grand son had a good time, he got to sit in one of the cars. Thanks again to the owner of that car.
I didn't see that until you asked about it.I don't know. What caught my eye on this is the tilted steering wheel and the headers
Yeah, lot's of us old guy's angled the steering shaft. moved more to the center of the car, plus flat tracking off a corner you were already facing the right way. don't think it helped any, but lot's of folks did it. I too admired the square tube headers. I've seen a few square tube roll cages, but never the headers. the air tank really baffles me though.
about all your questions about the 43........it has 2 air controlled tanks and they used air to move fuel from one tank to another and also i believe to get fuel into the 3 carbs. i am in the process of getting it ready to run on a track in vermont with the original driver "don lawlor".....dr. **** berggren is going to do a story on it`s return and get it in the magazine......the car is a cl***ic old time race car......musta run like a bear back then......i have not met the guy yet but plan to be there when she runs....enjoy.......jim martel
Boy this is something I remember as a child. West Peabody speedway and the Pines.. My favorite driver was Ollie Silver still remember him to this day in the Big O. Any other drivers you know??? I drove my first race at the Pines in a modified Edsel in street stock. Remember the spectator races at the end of the night. You run what you drove there with. Had a friend that drove his dad new ford that his dad got 10 days before and totaled it. Never saw my friend again!
quick note.....last week we took the 43 to the fairgrounds in keene nh.....the original driver don lawler was there to meet us and the 88 yr old driver jumped in the car and raced it around the old 1/2 mile dirt track........what a sight...the smile on dons face was worth all the work.......alot of pics were taken and look for the story in dr. **** berggren`s speedway illustrated magazine.......
We campaigned a B car at West Peabody around 1960. I was the designated engine builder(at 16) and managed to blow up as many as held together. The number of the car was 1/5th because it was sponsored by 3 guys who were all members of Alcoholics Anonymous! Dave Martin was the driver. Other B cl*** drivers were John Parsons and Roger Lancey(sp?). The A cl*** drivers I remember were Bruce LaBonte(#181);Red Seguine(sp?)in the Pontiac powered Flyin' 5;and Jerry Doliber(sp?) either #26 or 27. Some good times there.
Yes the spectator races at the Pines were quite a show. About half way thru the A main you could see headlights start coming down from the parking lot. When they came out on the track there was always at least one idiot with a new car out there. Everyone was always rooting for the new car to get creamed. No helmets , no seatbelts and blue dot taillights, that was real racing. Thanks for posting.
