im looking at getting a late 80's dodge 1ton truck that has a 5.9 ***mins with turbo-auto trans to use in a vintage tow truck.

motor has about 140K original miles and well maintained.

what is the motor worth ? i want to buy a complete truck for the harness and anything else i might need in the process of swapping the motor over . so going by what salvage yards want for a bare motor im not sure how much to give for the entire truck.

it 4X4 if that makes any difference

  2. To use that motor all you need is the one wire for the fuel shutoff valve! real simple to transplant into various projects. around here that motor would go for 800-1500 depending on if it has the inter cooler or not. I just missed out on a 92 long bed for 800 bucks, was a pretty good deal. complete trucks around here are still going for at least 1500-2500 for wrecked ones.

Around here it's unusual to hear of a 5.9 going for less than $1500 and it usually will have over 200k on it. Huge bonus that yours is in a vehicle. The 1ton front axle (should be a dana 60) will go for $1000 or more if it's for a single rear wheel.
The motor is a very easy swap. I deal with them all day on base and there are tons of tweaks you can do.

Just FYI, 5.9 ***mins were not intercooled until the '91 model year if that matters to you. They also had a VE injection pump that is very easlily modified for respectable power.

I'm sure you could plumb in a intercooler pretty easily. As for a trans, a getrag was the original 5 spd that came with those trucks. A good upgrade would be a NV4500 5 speed.

I believe it's a pretty straight forward swap. The NV4500 was in dodges/***mins made 94-02.

sight unseen, if you can drive it home $1500
could be more with such low miles

I'd like to here more on this if you could. My 93 could use a little more power when towing the Comet. Are there any sites for dodge/***mins trucks?

They also had a VE injection pump that is very easlily modified for respectable power.

Judd, check out dieseltruckresource.com, they have a section for first generation dodges. Search for "fuel pin", "star wheel", and "smoke screw". It's very easy to figure out.

The 6BT ***mins is a great swap into an older truck. I've done it with my F4 and it is a great driver and highway cruiser.

Don't "quote" me on this one :D but with your '93 being the last year of the first generation 5.9's, the injection pump should have 3 bolts holding it on (if I recall) and you can loosen them and turn the pump (like advancing the timing) and it will dump more fuel....not sure how much power is gained, but one of my buddies did it to his '93 and it doesn't cost anything

The pump itself doesn't move. You remove the 4 bolts on top of the IP and rotate the pin inside the pump to ad more fuel, along with a few other simple tweaks.

Aha! I knew somebody would know. Thanks sixshooter

  15. I put a TST #6 fuel plate and a set of high flow fuel valves in my 95. It will easily pull my 30' fifth wheel up the California Grapvine at 55-60 mph. Total cost was about 400 bucks. If you change the fuel valves, be sure to order the special socket

Not to sound like an ***, I like the idea of a ***mins in a vintage tow rig, MPG dependable, torque, but this board will bash the fuc* out of someone putting a late model fuel injected V8 in their 50's Chevrolet and tell him to move on to another site where they will help with his ****. And then roll over and give diesel advice..a lot of guys are willing to give advise and not **** in the other guys hand at the drop of a hat just to get a few thousand more posts one two or three year anniversary. Just sayin....

Around here a VE pumped 6bt will be in the $1000-1500 range for a complete running engine, the 727 isn't worth much the NP205 t-case about $250-350 and the Dana 60 front/Dana 70 rear about $800-1200 for the pair, but being a non intercooled engine it may have 3.07 geared axles and that will make the front a Dana 61 and value a lot less then the the dana 60. You don't need the harness to make that engine run ust power to the fuel shut off seloinod and you can by p*** that with a pull cable. The non intercooled trucks have more timing and larger injectors then the intercooled 1st gens from the factory and are a bit more peppy, a Fuel pin, 3200 spring, pump tuning and a smaller 16cm exhaust housing will make it really snappy and can be down for less them $600. You can put a intercooler on it easy, but the upper t-stat housing, vac pump, intake, are different and would need to be swapped. The VE rotory pumps are good pumps but only good for about 500HP with out lots of upgrades, the P pumps of the 94-98 trucks are the way to go. I have acouple of both and like them all, the 94-98 engines are the way to go if big HP is what your after.

Also to put a NV4500 in it just get the starter, trans adapter, fly wheel/clutch, bell housing, and trans from a 94+ dodge are a flywheel/clutch, bell, trans from another 1st gen if you want a Getrag 360 5-speed. Alot of people dog the stock Getrag but they are pretty strong if you don't lug them in 5th gear and you over fill them 1 qt, both the getrag and NV4500 have down falls, the NV has problems with the 5th gear nut backing off and loosing 5th. The nv shift a bit tighter and smoother then the Getrag but both are good trans.
