Here is a photo of Eddie Sachs at Langhorne in 1955 in the first HOW sprint car. The car was built by Frank Kurtis who cut down Roger Wolcott's Champ car after Johnny McDowell lost his life in the car at Milwaukee.

This is the second HOW sprint car. I believe it became the Platolene 500 Spl. with Chevy power, under Mari Hulman's ownership, and then it was sold to Jack Colvin in 1962.

V-16 Miller Pleasure car CHASSIS is complete, primed, and I have begun installing driveline components. We do not have a Front drive case for this car cast and machined yet so I had to build a "Mock" front case out of Steel. Then I made solid mounts to locate it and the axle so I could hang the V tower Front engine mount (Which also holds the TWIN Magneto's). This car has a "Sub frame" that holds the entire driveline from front case all the way back to the Transfer case. It all gets "stacked" in there, which is what you see begining below.

Joe Leonard update


Good news on Joe Leonard! Update from Steve Gregory: Some Guys have luck and no talent, Joe #98 has lots of talent and apparently lots of luck too.. I'm proud to share with you that he is doing very well!..On Tuesday afternoon and evening, the doctors didnt think he would make it thru the nite and asked me for after care directives. I had all that ready, but I reminded him that after last years heart bypass, he promised to live to be 98 and that he's breaking our deal by checking out early. Being the champion he is, the next 48 hrs were miraculous. He became stable and alert, more clear headed and understood what happened and that he needed to be strong. There's a small amount of bleeding on the brain, but it should stop today. No more procedures are scheduled. He was approved to be placed in an Acute Rehab Facility for Physical and Speech Therapy and hopefully recover some movement on his left side to enhance his quality of life. This will take place early next week. Joe and Emily thanks everyone for all the prayers and support. He looks forward to getting situated and back in the groove.

 

Does anyone know what those bolts are for on the left front? Looks like the right front has them, too, but I can't enlarge it enough.

This is Frank Burriss at Hilltop Speedway in Marietta, Ohio back in the mid-60's. Racer Jim says this is an old Kurtis car. Here Buzzy Dill's (Owner) Duece is sporting a big block Ford. Our fellow poster Butch Evans was on that team - he'll know more.

When I started racing in 1968 with a rail frame TQ Midget I was told the belt was a leffety belt, I later learned it was a Sam Brown belt. I always wondered why it was called a leffety belt whin you were turning left but the torson was right.??????

 

Hi Guys, with Frank Curtis mentioned recently in the #16370's ,I have a query.
Does anybody know who was on his team in the '67 to '69 period .
Crew chief?
Wheel guys?
Gofer?
Or did he just do it all himself?
The photo I have of Dee Jones taking his Indy Rookie test in Frank's car has about 5 guys in it.
His other drivers were Wilbur "Bay" Darnell, and Al Loquasto if that might help to jog anybody's memory .

Gordon White ID the car as KK #354. Car disappeared in the 70's after being passed around the local area. Sure wish I would have known what we had but being a teenager, it was just an old race car.

Two views of the same car. On the Left Eddie Sachs in the Wally Meskowski Offy at Langhorne in 1960 and Ed Elisian in the Peter Schmidt Offy at Reading in 1957. Anybody know who bought the Meskowski Offy?

 

Wally had put a chevy in it for 1962. Wally came out with the new sprinter in 1963 that turned into the leffler...

But I do not know what happened to it.

I`m thinking Wynn`s 1 on the Hamb (Joe Fiore) might know where the car went.

 

Ex-Schmidt 44: Wally Meskowski ran it in USAC with the Chevy in 1962; sold it to Long who put in a Pontiac. Wayne Wolfe drove it in only one USAC race in 1963, at the Grove on March 31. Car was light gold with black lettering. Don't know after that. Photos taken on March 31.
