Here's another snap-on box I just picked up that I'm gona bring back to life. It's in pretty good shape. A few of the drawers are jacked up, but they'll get a beatin back into shape. Instead of paying $26 per 12 oz. can from snap-on, I'm just gona paint it with something easy to get that's not going away. It's what the guy on Collecting Snap-on uses. I found a thread on our sister site as well to help with removing the drawers. Also in the thread a guy posted a video. I went ahead and made my own spring retainers. Easy as pie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HatcI1ZY6Zw http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9832
So far so good, I ended up mothballing the project due to time! It has a first coat of paint and needs a second. At some point I'll get back to it. I'll keep y'all posted.
Very cool. You should post it in the vintage tool box thread as well. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=146631&highlight=tool+box
Are you doing anything with the logos? Mine are a little run, I was thinking a re-chrome would be a good idea. I have NO CLUE what it would cost to get the handle, and the logo done. Any idea?
I didn't know people restore Snap-on boxes, I still use a Kra 59 71 vintage w/3 drawer spacer box (66 model) on my service truck, removed the lid to put in the service box, 76 Kra-59 in the shop along w/ matching 5 draw bottom rollaround, tossed the Kra-53 a few yrs ago, what a dumb shit!!!!!!!! all Snap-On boxes before the late 70's were made by Metel Box Corp, MBC was exactly the same, Snap-On bought Mbc, according to my Snap_on tool rep!!!!
I have KRA 59 sitting on a KRA 307. I bought them in 1990 from a friend for 50.00 bucks. My big box is a pair of KRA 557's mounted on a common frame. Lee
Here is one I pulled from a dumpster and cleaned up. Thinking it is a late 50's early 60's KRA-53 "Mechanichest" Note there is no "R" for registered trademark on the snap-on logo.
