This past Sunday was the fall "Sloppy Mechanics" dyno day. Decided to see what my 49 Chevy could do.

First run was in 3rd up to 3700rpm, made 62 wheel horsepower. Second run was in 2nd up to 4,000, made 67 horsepower. Made about 130ft/lbs of torque.

This is a stock-rebuild 1955 235 with headers and a 2 barrel carb (which is not working properly) through a Th350.

Just for point of reference, I'm running a 53 235 block with a 61 848 head in my 41 Sedan. Block was bored .030, new cast pistons and chrome rings, Comp Cams custom hyd camshaft, Clifford intake with 390cfm Holley 4bbl, Fenton headers/split exhaust, Pertronix 6v ignition with full advance at 34 degrees. The rocker ***embly is tweaked with shims and lash caps to achieve max lift from the cam. We put it on an engine dyno prior to installation last year and it pulled 148.8hp at the crank. That was at 4588 rpm. Torque was fairly flat. 185 ft-lbs at 2378 rpm to 180 ft-lbs at 4000 rpm. Torque at max HP was 170 fl-lbs.
A couple of old timers told me that 150Hp is about the max you can expect from one of these 235's, so I'm pleased with the numbers. The car is great fun to drive with a T5 trans and 57 Chevy rear with 3:55's. If anyone is interested in the details of the build along with pics, check out my blog.

Here is a 261 with the 848 head modified by Sissell's in West Covina. On an engine dyno it cranked out 178 HP and still has room for more. I see 292's getting over 250 HP regularly if prepared correctly.

I'll prob bring it back for their spring dyno day if I can get the carb problems worked out. It's either the carb is just junk (rebuilt it about 3 times now) or the 2 into 1 adapter is screwing everything up.

Yes on the adapter from my experience on the those pieces tapered down to the size of the original intake opening. They can cause mixture issues at full throttle.
This is what I do and it has worked great in th past with a 300 cfm Holley 2300 2 bbl ******ed off an IHC 266 V-8. Now doing it with a Rochester 2G
