First time doing this type of thing and can't figure out how to run the linkage from the gas pedal to the carb. This a '51 chevy truck with 250 inline motor. I am using an Offy manifold with a Holly carb and split manifold....I am sure someone already has something similar that can help me run this linkage the right way. A picture can be helpul they tell 1000 words...
Some will disagree with this, but you could turn it so that the throttle linkage is one the outside of the manafold. Some do it and claim that they don't notice any difference, while others claim that the mixture isn't evenly distributed. I have run one with a Holley 94 mounted with it lined up with the outside of the manafold, and the plugs didn't look any different to me. So I would say that it probably caused no real harm. I think that there is so much reversion going on in that intake that it keeps things well mixed up, given the uneven runners and such. And I intend to set my Rochester 2bbl up the same way on mine. Good Luck!
have you considered making an adapter base to turn carb 90 degrees so fuel bowl forward as in OEM application??
Turnoing the carb is not a bad idea but is the bracketry and linkage part that is killing me. How do I connect pedal to carb???
The original setup from GM had a bellcrank down low on them - the pedal came straight thru the firewall and pushed against the bellcrank, it rotated and pushed up (or it can pull, like for the holley, depending on what part of the bellcrank the carb linkage comes from. The carb linkage arm came up inside of and between the exhaust manifold legs to teh cylinders. I, too would turn the holley to orient it facing forward, there are plates that you can get that go under the carb that have a bracket for lokar type cable. that would be easiest for you.
Not exactly your setup but here is my cable setup on a 235 with dual carbs. The cable just runs through the firewall to the pedal.
So the cable attaches directly to the pedal...what keeps the the cable tense and the pedal returning?
I have a s**** type pedal that the pedal attaches directly to (sorry no picture). If you look closely behind the intake manifold in my picture you can see two springs one inside the other that pulls the throttle and the pedal back to a closed position when you take you foot off the gas.
The way I had to do it was the cable was attached to my gas pedal, and ran to the carb. It has a little tension to keep the gas flowing going to the carb. When I turn the key it would start up fine. If you do switch to cable linkage make sure you take the car around the block a few times to get use to it. Also to ensure the cable is connected correct. I learned from experience.
Found this pic on google. Basic throttle setup using a cable. Kinda backwards from yours (unless you flipped carb around so the choke lever was in front), but I think the same idea would work. I think it would be cleaner looking to turn the carb and make a plate with an arm out of flat steel. Then attach brackets for the cable, and another for the return spring. I'm having the same issue with my '51 since it was all rigged in there. thanks for the heads up on the cable. will try that on it.
I sandwiched a plate between carb and adaptor with a bracket that accepts a stock square throttle cable. The cable shown is really long and loops around from the front. I think I will turn mine 90 deg and put a shorter cable straight to the firewall. I think the long cable came off an postal jeep from the junkyard.
A pic of mine in my old 65. Bellcrank hooked to arm on firewall. Threaded rod bent to fit. I set my carb like yours cause of choke cable and fuel line had no room in front.
I gues after all of the input I am going to be doing a cable set up...keeping simple. I will get me a Lokar pedal a cable that I can cut to size and couple of brackets should do it. I am still debating between firewall mounted or floor mounted...I'll probably go with the wall mounted since the floor on a 51 chevy truck has a weird slope and done want the pedal looking awarkd.... ....what do you experienced guys think...floor or wall mount???
