Fellas, I am having problems with the turn signal/flasher setup on the 55. I have confirmed both taillights and brake lights are working (after buying and installing a new stoplight switch). I am not getting anything from the turn signal switch. I have a few questions about this: 1. is the 55 Chevy switch the same as is on my poncho? 2. anyone have a good source for these switches? I would really rather not put an aftermarket turn signal setup in the car, so I am determined to get it working properly. As always, thx for your inputs and help!!
No front turn signals and yes, all running lights and brake lights work with turn signal switch in the nuetral position. I haven't noticed if any of the lights dim when the turn signal switch is engaged. I have had my fair share of issues related to grounding on old chevy trucks, but as far as I can tell it seems to be the switch. If the fuse was blown I would have nothing to the rear lights right?
There are two different power sources going to the turn signal switch. One is the turn signal flasher can, which gets power when the key is on. The other is the brake light switch, which gets power all the time. If the flasher can is bad, or if there is no power to it, it would not blink. The brake lights would still work.
Oh I see. Well, I have changed the flasher can and I have also changed the brake light switch and confirmed power from the brake light switch to the flasher, so I need to confirm power from the key switch to the other leg of the flasher unit?
The brake lights switch should not be connected to the flasher, it should be connected to the turn signal switch. The flasher can should be connected to a different terminal on the turn signal switch. This is how they are usually wired, the block in the center is the turn signal switch, and the 4 corners of the car are wired to the ends of the switch.
The power for the flashers comes directly from the fuse box. If you don't have the wiring diaghrams here a link to help, it's for a 57 but the wiring is the same for what you need. There's also an online 55 Pontiac shop manual at pontiacsafari.com http://starchief57.tripod.com/wiring.htm
