I am thinking about buying it and want to make sure 1. it's not stolen, and 2. If it used to belong to someone on here that might know a little more about it. Thanks,

Hey guys, I got the owner to send me some more pics. I have a pretty good idea of what i'm looking at but I was hoping some of you FED guys could pick through these and see if anything stands out be it good or bad. The guy wants $2000 for this, is it a good deal? He took it on trade for some work he did and doesnt know much about it. He says it is a GM 12 bolt rear end and that the motor is a late model vortec. Thats all he knows. This would be my first rail (have had many door slammers)so I will be conservative with power and keep it above 10 sec. for a while. Ok boys, let me have it!

Sorry I don't know anything about the car, but $2000. sounds pretty cheap. I would buy it for that, just to park it in my driveway and freak the neighbors out!. Good luck.

Straight answer..... I would not get out of the Electric Chair to strap into that.
Sorry just being honest.

Thanks for the quick replys! Just for the record, I am not talking about just firing it up and heading to the track. I'm sure it needs some attention but does it look like a good start? My thoughts were to pick this up and put some work into it as an intro to rails. I would love to just build one ground up but it would be awhile untill funds allow that. Keep em coming guys!

Well, it has a nice steering box - most else is suspect.

He says it was built some time in the 60's or 70's and was raced untill about 5 years ago. Don't know if this is accurate or not. The rear end has me scratching my head, Did they add on to the rear cover to make room for the ring gear or is that supposed to be for nut safety?

I started with a lot less when I built my FED (1980). It's now for sale at $19,000.00, and had been through a couple of different owners since I had it. I like short FED's. That engine has centerbolt valve covers, but it's NOT a VORTEC. I'm pretty sure the rear is not a GM 12 bolt (similar however). It's too short to NOT have a sprung front suspension. Offer the guy half of what he's asking, with the cash in hand. Get a rule book to bring it up to spec. Someone has posted a new site in the forum, DragsterSupply.Com, worth a look. 13. I saw one like it in a "Little Rascles" short, I think it had pinwheels on the rears.

14. Trust me, you don't have to ask.

Butch- A SFI book is on the way already, I am going back and forth on it but you are probbably right on the price, half sounds good. Even if I have to build a new ch***is, this would give me a starting point.

I have a narrowed 9" that is 36" flange to flange with 31 spline chrysler axles, that I ran under a nova for a while that would be a good upgrade to the rear end. As well as taking that u-joint and throwing it as far away from me as possible and installing a coupling! On the other hand, this would be my first rail and alot of people that know more about them than me have said to walk away so it makes me wonder, what is it about this thing that just screams piece of **** to you guys? I'm not asking in a bad way, just want to know so that I don't have to ask these questions again. Or have the answer dawn on me while i'm tumbling down the big end of the track sideways. Thanks for all of the replys guys, for the most part all the FED guys seem like a welcoming bunch which I appriciate.

There is a steep learning curve when you attempt to get in to any Racing that is new to you.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />
You are asking good questions about a ch***is that will never be right.
In my opinion one thing to do is attend a local Bracket race and talk to the Guys running the FED’s.
They are almost always willing to talk to you, and help someone trying to start out.
You will see what they are running, and get a feel for what is right and what is wrong.
This could save you a lot of time and money.
The term FED and cheap do not go together in the same sentence.
You need at least a little “Budget” to do it right and most importantly SAFELY.
Get acquainted with this knowledge before you spend your hard earned Money, you will be miles ahead if you do.
Safe Ch***is’ that are currently certified can be had for a very reasonable amount and will give you a good starting point to build on.
I wish you all the best in your Racing.

I've been rnostalgia racing Funny Cats for years, and have dealt with several dragsters as I was going to race one at one point. I would be shocked if this car would even come close to p***ing tech without major work, most likely a complete back half. If you want it for the wheels and tires, steering box and front axle it might be a good buy at $1000, however that would depend on the condition of the steering box. I would continue to look if it were me, cheap is not good when your life and safety depend on it.

I guess I was hoping that it just looked like a peice of **** but had some good bones, or at least had some half *** **** done to it that could be undone. The parts might be a good start and then build a new ch***is, I guess Ill go look at it on Sat but only take a little cash with me so I don't get all excited and buy it. I would hate to buy it and then have to park in the far back corner of the pits and dodge the guys throwing rocks at me as I drive by:D I guess Ill post a wanted ad for a ch***is and mabey spend my money on something worth while. Thanks for all the help guys!

I would never stand in the way of sombodys dream, BUT there is NOTHING on that pile that is worth using. Wouldnt waste the gas to go over and really look at it even if they wanted $200 for it.

Knowledge prevails! I have decided not not bother with it. Thanks guys for keeping me from wasting my time and money. Is there anyone in the Austin tx area with a REAL fed that would be willing to let me come take a more detailed look at what im working towards? I have looked at a bunch in the pits but don't really like bothering people there as there is enough **** going on without some clown asking a million questions. Mabey give some pointers? Thanks again guys!

probably piling on at this point, but lots of good advice says "no!" I fully agree.

27. I would say do a search here with "FED" in it and you will see a number of good build threads. That should give you plenty of ideas. That's what I did, in the end I just bought a set of plans from Mark Williams, adjusted it to 140" and built my own. Good luck and have fun! It's gonna be FUN!
