What is with all the artsy pics lately? Not that I have anything against anyone using a little different approach to taking a pic, but man-sometimes I actually want to see what I'm looking at. So many times a vehicles stance or even proportions get distorted by someones 'artsy' style photography that I can't figure out if the car looks good, or if it has something funky being hidden by the photography?
Some people have one leg shorter than the other, so the pics are at an angle. Others have bad eye sight and only do close-ups of hood ornaments and hubcaps. And photoshop is not cool for car show pics. I like to see the car as it is. Not enhanced. Now if someone could do 3D.... THAT would be cool.
Whenever "artsy" pics get posted on a thread, a bunch of guys end up humping the photograper's leg, and then a bunch more show up. Beats the hell outta me what I'm looking at sometimes...
Who you callin' *Artsy?* Me??? Personally, I tire easily when guys go to shows and all they take are a zillion horizontal pics of the cars and nothing but the cars........can you say, *boring?*.... I want to see the people as well....what are they doing? How are they dressed? I also want to see the atmosphere or setting where the show or event is happening.......a sense of *place*, if you will...... I also want to see little details that fill out the bigger picture at an event......hood ornaments, handles, toppers, license plates, and shit like that..... Just my way of thinking.....and I can do 3D with my new camera, but who in hell could view it in 3D? CB
Brucie, I just checked out a couple of your posts with event coverage. No, your style isn't what I mean. I dig most of the pics I saw. I agree that the people and locations are just as interesting as the cars many times. I think most people know what I am talking about be the other responses so far. As far as who could see your pics in 3d? I still have some blue and red 3d glasses...
Bwaaaaa!....OK, Joe......I'll do some 3D pics and post them just for you!! I try not to be *too damn* artsy......just a little.....but I'm allowed, as I do have a degree in Art..... CB ;^)
All I'm saying is "variety". Not every pic needs to be at a 45 degree angle. A few close-ups are cool, but a whole thread of them is too much. A couple pics of where the event was and a couple crowd shots are cool. Not a montage of people walking around. I understand some folks are learning, but it seems when advice (constructive advise) is given, they get their panties in a bunch. 'Cuzn, you usually have great pics and it seems you've done it a while. Bad Bob takes good pics as well. Maybe some of you guys, that have been doing it for a while, can start a thread to give some tips. I don't get magazines much anymore, so the pics here are a treat. I would like to enjoy what I'm supposed to be looking at. And I'd like to see what 3D would look like. I'm schooled in graphic design, but don't do it for a living. I didn't like sitting on my ass in front of a screen all day.
It was cool at first, or at least I thought it was. Now it seems everyone's doing it and using the same software and Photoshop plugins.
I am wondering......can anyone please post a few of the *artsy* pics so that we can see what type of pics are being referenced here...... I think it would help to see a few examples.......anyone? Thanks.... CB
These are some photos taken of my chev when I first got it almost a year ago on a 50's leica film camera by a good friend of mine. He develops the film and everything himself. I dont know about artsy but I much prefer film shots then digital. I don't know what it is but I just like them better. Now when ever I go to a car show all I take is my 1965 cannon 35mm film camera.
Just some photos of photos i took with my cannon 35mm at the chopped rod and custom weekend in Victoria Australia
I'm reasonably certain that the fellow's posting the "art", are proud of their work, so I don't think it would be appropriate to single someone out and rip them. It's the "enhanced", or manipulated stuff that irks me. The subject matter is less important to me. I like different stuff, but I enjoy seeing it as my eyes would normally see it... as nature intended.
Ed.......maybe I wasn't clear.....I didn't ask for the photos to be indentified by who did the pic, or for anyone to post their own pics....not wanting anyone to get *ripped*... just wanted to see examples from *anywhere* of what type of pics seem to be hard for some, such as you and the OP to appreciate..... I understand that you'd prefer to view *straight ahead* type shots, but.... Remember, it's an art form.....photography was invented by a man (Niepce back in the 1800's)...has nothing to do with what *nature intended*......it's an expressive medium.....and some will be more expressive than others.... CB
To complain about artistically framed photos is the dumbest thing I've seen on here in a while. Go put that negative energy towards hating on the rockabilly guys and girls like the rest of the haters..haha
Tell you what if it is one of my cars and you see an artsy pic it is because there is something funky being hidden. I think that folks just want to be remembered for something and photogs sometimes want to be remembered for their style. I personally am not artistically inclined so I normally shoot whatever it is the way that it is. I don't sing worth a flip either. I don't see anything negative about what the OP posted it just opens up discussion. I haven't get a handle on it so maybe someone can enlighten me why when a fella posts an opinion on a subject he automatically becomes a hater. I don't like cottage cheese so does that make me a hater?
Here's an extreme example, Bruce. A VERY extreme example, but you'll get the idea. I like art, but if I want to see it, I'll head to the art gallery. I come here to see cars. Also, consider that the most popular threads on here, and the most viewed are "OLD PHOTOS" !
Agreed. I think we have a friday art show and that may be a good place for artsy pics. I have a tendency to move past a thread that says I shot so and so's car friday. When I see so and so's car I want to see it as it is. if so and so's car is funky then its just funky and if its not I would probably like to know that it is not.
I do event recaps on our car clubs forum and once in awhile throw in a worked over picture. I posted a few I played with from Shelby's Hot Rod Get Together last weekend in the KY HAMBers social group and one of the guys posted them in a thread out here on the main board. To be honest I perfer the clear color shots. If I'm shooting my own vehicles I do like a cool building as a background, but I don't really consider that artsy. In a short coherent version of what I just said. I think a few artsy shots mixed in with the regular shots is good, as long as you don't go overboard. Variety is the spice of life and all that jazz.
IMO anyone that uses photoshop to Dr. their photos up didn't take it good enough in the first place. I'm all for using to photoshop or photobucket to change things up to make them look cooler, but not every freaking picture. IMO Here is an example of getting getting too fancy and not getting a good first pic... I realized it looked like poop and reset myself for this one... Still not perfect but much better than the 1st one. Here is something a little more "artsy" Yet i still step back and get the full shot. I usually like to get lower and shoot a nice level pic. It adds to the style and dynamic of the vehicle. Finally here is an example of where a bit of a tilt to the camera adds character to the vehicle. And i do agree it is nice to step back and take a group shot IMG]http://i827.photobucket.com/albums/zz193/chummins/ky%20car%20show/kycarshow199.jpg[/IMG]
at the momment all i have is avery beaten up (dropped too many times) 3 AAA powered vivatar camera to take pics with any kind of artsy pics i take are purely my own doing i dont do photoshop or any of that im a model builder also so if i see a really cool or rare car i tend to take alot of small detail shots of it i prefer low angle 3/4 view front shots but my damn knees are so worn out i dont take many of them i dont get all the guys here who go to a car show and take pics of people, fine if they are YOUR friends keep them seperate/private from what you post here i have no problems looking at a fine looking non tatted woman but when i click on a a thread from ashow i want to see the cars i take some atmosphere shots also but not many cause im too focused on the cars especailly at a show where the cars move around alot my girlfriend is hinting around at a new "bigger better " camera for christmas because i take soo many pics ..so maybe my pics will change and be better ....maybe and i dont mind others artsy pics i knda like em , except when one pick is angled one way then the next is angled back the other way kinda gets me sea sick i dont really care for the photoshop enhanced "look what i can do" pics i prefer the car the way it is nice and clean or rusty junk
Here let me fix this image for you. PDQ This is exactly what we are talking about. I think it is nice and maybe something you would like to hang on the wall but no one can tell squat about your roadster or even that it is a roadster from those shots.
Ive kinda given up on taking pictures at shows, there are a couple extremely talented photogs in the area that make up for it though! Most all my shots try to get as much of the car in 1 shot as possible, but they all come out nearly the same. I also like getting solo shots but all shows around here they park whomever next to whatever! So, now I do a little of everything and have fun with it, after all it is a hobby for me! As an example this is my standard shot of LeadSledMercs taildragger: And now artsy!:
Images of cars are not always just about what it looks like. A variety of images is always more interesting to me....if one doesn't like it one can just move on to one they do like.
define "artsy". blasting the color saturation on a snapshot at a car show with coolers and pop up shade things and people walking by does not make it art. for those who think somehow photoshop is bad... I use it on just about everything. resizing, cropping, straightening out the shot, moving coolers and chairs from the shot.. fixing the lighting, all sorts of things.
I think "artsy" pictures are great------sometimes. What drives me NUTS though is when they do it in a BUILD thread! Like someone starts a chop thread, and never posts any straight on side views!!! If it doesn't stand up to a side shot, keep chopping it til it does, somebody's gonna see it eventually! What's funny though is how many guys jump in there and "hump their leg", when they're not seeing anything more than the rest of us.
49ratfink, can you post a before for us, so we can see the difference? Looks like a normal picture to me...
I think pics taken with old film are killer and I dig some photoshop if it looks real and helps the pic. What I consider "Artsy"(that is a very Richard Simmons like word to describe cars) are the super zoomed in pics of emblems, hood ornaments, air cleaners, reflection pictures etc.I mean yes some of them look killer but when one looks good it sprouts up so many more super zoomed pictures from everyone else.If I want to see what hood ornament looks like 2 inches from my face I will just hold one close to my face.Im not trying to bag on guys who shoot them pictures but like Special Ed mentioned earlier.... we are looking at cars and if I want to see some "Artsy" stuff I will head to the gallery.I know if I dont like seeing them then I shouldnt look but since the thread was up I just had to say what I consider "Artsy".
