  2. I don't like to admit it but most of my old hoopties never get past the bodywork and primer stage.

No one ever considered them trad it was just the '****** out haveing a good time, in some old beater with a hot mill (or not:D).

I'm thinking that satin paint and or flat paint is a pretty good medium to work in, perhaps more fad than trad but who cares.

If you build one rough and cruise it when it is no longer stylish you can finish it its already built and you got the bugs sorted out. Right?

Magazine coverage has more to do with promotion than haveing the absolute most drop dead gorgeous car on the planet. If you want to make the pages of someone's magazine get out there and promote yourself.

  5. I totally agree!

Maybe we can come up for a name for this type of rodder...

How about "The ****er" The ****er gets ****ed into pointless, dumb*** threads... and just HAS to comment. The ****er comments on things he knows nothing about... but feels he has to interject. The ****er sometimes tries to be "cool" by making short comments about stuff.

Oh wait... we're all ****ERS!! Hahahahahahahaha!!! :D

i just dont understand...i go to shows and see these cars in primer, and well basically junks, and everyone is like oh wow look at the traditional hor rod, or kustom...this just dosent make any sense to me...i just dont beleive that in the 40's 50's and 60's people put together cars and primed them and said, wow kool heres my done car...paint existed didnt it???, hell im sure even buckets of water, sponges and soap even existed didnt they????...

The difference between now and then is that back in the day they built there cars to DRIVE To RACE to go to the DRY LAKES to go to CARRELL SPEEDWAY to run at Soldiers Field, 16th st. speedway, not to put a $10,000 dollar paint job on and load it in a trailer and take it to goodguys to sit in a lawn chair, sure there were nice cars, they had incredible craftsmen back in the day, look at A.J. Watson, Frank Kurtis, Harry Miller, no one today is any better, Everyone likes when their car gets some attention but thats not why REAL Hot Rodders build their cars. Actually I am not sure their are any REAL HOT RODDERS anymore. Hell maybe the HONDA KIDS that get blasted on here are what REAL Hot Rodders have become, they spend every penny they have on their cars and run the **** outta them. I am not saying that's my kinda car just giving you all something to think about.

Well almost...My '57 Olds 88 was named the "Impressor" by my friends 'cuz it could light up my ****red Street Slicks for seeminly endless burnouts...we also had "Poncho's Pirate"..a '63 421 Catalina...Rodge's Dodge...a '64 Coronet w/a 383....but that was in the early/mid 60's...and the "Challenger"...a '64 Coronet 426 Wedge...and, yea, the names were painted on the sides at least for a little while until tastes changed...

Anything is better than those monochrome pro-street creations of 5 years ago.
Does anyone remember that feature in Street Rodder where they showed some guy with his fibergl*** bodied roadster and the fake rust and brown primer and mexican blanket? Imagine putting fake rust on a 'gl*** car? Nobody saw through that for the B.S that it was and now everyone is copying.
I hate to say it but this hobby is full of sheep that just follow the trend thats printed in the magazines. If they print monocolor, tubbed, prostreet style cars and trucks thats what the grey haired rich folks will build. Not everyone obviously but the checkbook guys will always follow the trend as it's shown to be on TV or in print. Then when it's out of style they sell it and build a "Rat". I guess some folks need a magazine to tell them whats cool or not. I dont think those folks hang around in here though. The problem is that "traditional" could become so popular that it becomes a fad and goes out of style.
Personally I'm building mine to look like it belongs in American Graffiti. I like the look (timeless) and it fits my budget.

I do remember that car, the fibergl*** one with the bird**** all over it. I think that was in Rod and Custom, not Street Rodder. That was wierd. I remember that the guy said he burnt 66 quarts of oil driving across country (or something like that) and a guy wrote in the next month to ***** about it because of the pollution (which was a legitimate gripe) I wonder where all those monochrome, tubbed out, Weld-wheels havin' street rods are now, are they all being hidden out of shame?

i think ur missin the point u talk about all the old magsthat show car show cars so of course they're going to be painted. alot of the early footage of drag, lake and salt racing shows cars built more the "rat rod" (tired of that term but everyone understands it) way. some of us like that look. i think a "rat rod" looks alot meaner than a painted rod. theres more freedom in what ur calling an unfinished car, we don't have to worry who we park next to or if there's to much dust on our car while tryin to show it off. i think people look at the "unfinished" hot rods and see a time where they or someone they know have talked about hot rodding back in the day. don't get me wrong a love a nice painted rod but don't attack people just because their flavor is from something different. 2morrow u might be next to an "unfinished" car and some guy might be talkin what a rusty piece it is.
i wish i had a good pic of the roadster squeak bell here in bakersfield bought its a traditional hot rod that an older gentlemen raced the last time he worked on it was in 62 i think. that thing is a piece of history and its kept the way it was. some jack*** could of picked it up painted it took out the 303 and sbc'd it and some would say cool car and some would say kick his ***. my buddy dave in the red model a in the 2nd issue of TRnK won some award at the march meets. so i'm sure ur day will come.

ok i just gotta chime in.. i drive all my rods and customs in primer until there finished..but when im driving them in primer they are ALWAYS clean and so are the whitewalls.. like hotrod29 said is it not trad to use soap and water? and i dont like the idea of some over channelled toilet with no floors, working lights, exhaust, and probably brakes screaming down the same road my wife and 5year old are travelling on! i could go forever about the dirty rat rod look but ill stop here.. whatever style someone biulds there car weather they are rich or poor , at least do the best you can, and take a little pride in the finished product.. and lastly NADS get of the computer for a few minutes before you go blind for christsakes haha

I was soooo paranoid that the primer guys wouldn't like it and the spit polish and chrome set would look down on me, that I did mine half and half. The front half is shinny and the back half is suede.:D

Everybody must love me now! right? Is it OK guys? huh? huh? huh?

WHAT? you'd built it differently? Well...**** ya then!

Do I really have to wash it? I'm really proud of the mud!:D

Spike this has nothing to do with what happened in Asbury. None of us care about mag coverage or a trophy, we build them to drive them.

Half the people that posted on this thread ****. Half of them don't even own a car. Half the ones that do own a car didn't build it. So If you fall into any of those categories shuttup.

Everyone comes on here to talk ****. I will single out Satan's Ride. You are form Texas therefore have probably never been to Jersey where Mike (HotRod29) and I are from and therefore have no idea who Mike is or what he does. To call his car a trailer queen is just plain stupid. Did he say he trailered it to the show and was mad cuz it didnt get shot for the mag no. You pulled that out of your *** and should do the same with your head. I'd love to piss on the cars that are trailered to shows just to see the owners cry. The only time either of our cars, or anyones in the club for that matter have seen somehting resembling a trailer is when something breaks on the way home from a show or even work or school.

I don't like you, not at all. I'm not commenting on what you may or may not have built, I'm commenting on you. You **** and I hope you come back at me and tell me I bought my car and trailer it everywhere cu I have pictures to prove I didn't and don't. Plus I have no money, I go to college and still somehow managed to finish a car and paint it. I drive it everyday, right now it is my only car until I build my next which will be driven also. My garage is filled with **** and my car cover is ripped. When the paint fades I'll tear it down and do it all over again.

**** rat rods, **** magazines, **** tropies, **** the new definition of "traditional". I will keep building what I want to please myself and so will the rest of my club.

Well if you really dig in you will find the tasteless dufus copycat wannabe element has alwys existed. We tend to freeze-frame some image and glamourize it. Just pick up a 50s issue of J.C. Whitney and see all the goofy-***ed stuff people were sticking all over their cars.
I have been building jalopys with mostly cheap or free parts since I was a kid in the 60s and had lots of fun. That doesn't mean I intentionally tried to make anything look like a poverty case. I mean dam, right now I have 2 gallons of Farmall red enamel I got out of the bargain bin for $5 and will probably roll it on.(Yeah they did that alot back when). I would love to have a nice Duece with all the right stuff someday and it damsure wouldn't be primered, but for now I do what I can with what I have and enjoy it.

I would love to come out to Texas and photograph the two gallons of paint if at all possible. After all, I only shoot un-finished cars and that would be the ultimate un-finished car if the paint job was still in the can. But can you do me a favor and add flattener to it? I don't shoot shiny cars...or paint for that matter. The fact that its red bothers me as well. Can you make it darker? Almost black or a red oxide? Oh, and one more thing, can you add some cheesey flames to the can? Wonderful. I'll catch the next flight out. I thought I saw the horses leg move.....

Spike, no offense, but your keeping this thread just as alive (or more-so) than anyone else who posted on it, so the dead horse thing is kinda played out...and obvoiusly, by some of the responses here, by well respected members of this board, hotrod29 is not alone in his thinking...you just got your ******* in a bunch because you took it as a personal attack, so much so that you felt the need to extend your sarcasm of this topic into other threads...thats OK, you think your a funny guy, i can see that...i recall the Lead East thread from last September, where you basically did the same type of thing, and i called you an ***hole for it...i won't do that this time, but you continue to prove my point.....

Sorry, I was laughing too hard to think of anything else! This is the most fun I've had in a while! If I actually sat down and thought out a logical response, I wouldn't have posted in the first place. That would have been the smart thing to do. But no, I got ****ed in. Just like you did! Truth is, you guys have a great club with plenty of cool cars. Youre all doing what you love to do and have a good thing going. So, who cares about anything else? Its just been fun to watch this post go all over the place with each person reading into what it really means. Truth is, it doesn't mean anything! Maybe it was bad timing. I can go with that if thats the truth.

Now, if we want to drag up a post from last September, thats just a waste of time. My own personal feelings about "The Crook" haven't changed, and to be honest, I can't even remember what I wrote last year, but I'm sure it wasn't a smart thing to do. I never claimed to be smart. Obviously, I'm replying again to something I shouldn't have. I really should know better by now. Guess I'll keep my thoughts to myself and lurk until all the newbies have run thier respective courses. Rock on. Be well. Stay true to yourself.

    Love,
    Spike

Damn... After failing to get my flat clearcoat allright (mottled like h#@%ll)
and sanding the whole car for the third time in four days, I gave up with only
1½ week left for the show and painted it glossy. Judge my surprise when I
won two of the biggest awards on this 75.000 people customshow plus had a
lot of magazine coverage. And it wasn't even FLAT !!! :D :D :D
