Hey fellow gear heads! I have a 1950 Desoto sportsmen custom 2dr coupe. I will be dropping a 1969 caddy 472 engine in it with a small turbo. I'm expecting around 550 horse along with 600 torque. My question is this ...... Am I able to use the original frame if I beef it up or do I have to go to a Nova sub frame? Also what 5 speed manual can I run on this car? It will have 600 pounds of torque and the car weight approx. 3800 pounds? I will be running a gear in the neighborhood of a 390. I would rather run a six speed manual but have no idea what will work. I DO NOT want to run a automatic! This car will be built as a car that will be driven and not raced. I want the insane power for some fun here and there. I know some of you guys will be sicken by the fact I'm not keeping it "original" I could care less about original lol!!!! I wanna have a blast driving a rare car with a boat load of power!!!! ;-)

    Thanks guys
    Dave

The strength of the frame will be the least of your worries. You won't have to beef it up at all.

The frame should be fine. Brakes will be your Big concern.

If I remember correctly the 472 cad only weighs about 40 lbs. more then a small block chevy, the nickel content is much higher and they retain heat for days, so insulate the hell outta your firewall. frame will be fine....
