I tore up a rear wheel bearing one night, limped her home 2 miles where she glowed, smoldered and smoke for 20 minutes, towed her to the shop the next day and replaced the wheel bearing, seal, and gasket but she still leaked so then I replaced the axle shaft but she is still leaking, any suggestions please? what should I check? What am I overlooking? <!-- / message -->
the housing must be damaged. the outside diameter of the bearing should be a snug fit into the axle housing. check and see if it got damaged if the bearing seized up before it failed.
no, it's just the end of the housing were the seal and bearing register. If it got damaged oil can leak around the outside of the seal.
Check the axle shaft between centers on a lathe to make sure it's straight. Measure the wheel bearing bore to know it is of correct size and roundness with a good bore micrometer and known measurements from wheel bearing dimension specs. Measure any wheel seal surface diameters too to make sure they fit to wheel seal specs. It's like machine shop stuff. Sometimes .005" will make for a hell of a bad day.
