Hydraulic lifters with adjustable rockers. The rockers are crane iron. Running 10w30 oil if that makes a difference.
Your rockers are loose. You should adjust for zero lash and then 1/2 to 3/4 turn tighter. Just set the #1 cylinder on TDC, set intake and exhaust and then follow the firing order as you do the same for the rest of the cylinders.
I just did that this morning and was advised to 1 turn. It is quiet when cold then sounds like that when warm
It sounds like something is trying to get out. Remove the valve cover and see if there is any oil making it up to the rocker arms at idle. If not, find out where the flow stops before you really burn something up. Is this something that just started or did you change parts (cam/lifters/rockers) ?
sounds like adjustment, why the adjustable arms?, not anymore performance then the non adjustable ones?.
Even with restrictors in the heads it just pumps oil everywhere on the top end. Tried with the cover off. The reason it has adjustables on it is because they were on the engine before I rebuilt it.
did you go thru the rocker shafts? if the stands/shafts/rockers are worn it will gush oil, restrictors or not. if the shafts etc were tight did you pull the press in plugs at the ends of the shafts and make sure they were clean? if they are full of stuff they will dump oil around the stands and not oil the arms correctly. also did you check your pushrod length? personally i am not a fan of the adjustable rockers on a hyd cam, they just arent worth the extra trouble. if you do need shafts the 427 solid lifter shafts are still avail thru most parts houses if the counter guy knows where to look, they only have 1 oil hole per rocker instead of 2 and they will cure most eccessive oiling problems even w/o restrictors. they usually run about $50 a peice. what are you running as far as an oil additive?
No I have not dis***embled the shafts. I will pull a rocker and make sure it's the right way. The rockers don't seem to have any play in them. I did just discover that I need different shaft bolts. Someone replaced the narrowed bolts with standard bolts that I herd is not good. It is seeming like it is in my rocker ***emblies. A I am using vr1 oil and used bradd Penn to break in. It did gush oil out of the heads by flooding them quick.
if someone had non tapered bolts in the rocker ***emblies you need to check the holes thru the shafts/stands to make sure they arent wallowed out. look for grooves/galling etc on the shaft where the arm rides and pull a stand off and look into the shaft to see if its clean. and my2c stay away from synthetic oil until the motor is well broken in.
Well I just pulled one side and checked. It does have the stepdown bolts but the bottoms of the rockers are scored and the bottom of the shafts along with the stands too. Looking for a cost effective set.
just get a set of decent used non adj with pushrods from a junkyard. any fe thru '76, they're all the same. i bet you'll be good. and as far as the stands go they're all the same.
The Rhoades high-bleed lifters have the same sort of effect. When cold they are mostly quiet but when warm they sould like a noisy solid lifter. Maybe your lifters are bleeding down under lift like the Rhoades lifters do. http://www.rhoadslifters.com/
Well I got a few opinions on the rockers and was told by several that there was nothing wrong with it. They were a little worn but had next to no play. I got the front rocker shinned that was missing the waffle washer and changed oil to 20w50 vr1 as advised by Ken at Oregon cams. He said that. Fes liked a little heavier oil. It did help with oil pressure. I ran it for several minutes and took a short drive to get to operating temp. Crossing my fingers because when I got back and let it run some more it sounded good
Well I ran it and drove it some more to get it warmed up. I think the noise level is probably the norm. Can't hear it with the hood closed anymore.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMP4KA9zg3Q&feature=youtube_gdata_player I think this is where it's coming from
That possibility was suggested in post #4. From what I can see you also might want to confirm that the ball size on the rocker is the same as the cup on the pushrod. They aren't all the same.
My brothers 390 in his 67 Fairlane sounded like solids no matter what we did. He even tried a set of adjustables with no change. It carried good oil pressure but the ticking made him crazy and he sold it before we could get it sorted out. I would be intersted in your fix.
The pushrods that were in it when I tore it down where 3/8 heavy duty and fit the ball perfect. I ordered a stock adjustable rocker at work and did the same. Survival motorsports sent me a custom one that was laying around and it fit the ball great. I ordered a stock sealed power replacement and it does the same as the pushrods I have. I have elgins in it now that are stock length.
