Eelco 6 x 2 on X1 with Stromberg 97's Help

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HotRodGuy1932, Aug 26, 2011.

  1. Hi Guys,

    I have a X1 Manifold with 6 x 97's Strombergs

My problem is , there is no instructions with the EELCO Low profile kit

I really need some help with detailed pictures , mainly on the back close ups

I mean how do you mount it to the carbies , and remember we drive on the wrong side over here , so i would take it everything would have to be on right side instead of the left?

Alos have a look at my manifold , there a hole drilled in there when i bought it, is this for Dizzy va*** , or can i use this for the booster?

Any very detailed pictures and advice would be great help.

Oh by the way the Carbies have been rebulit by Max Musgrove in Utah

What a great job , i nearly cried when i seen them , they are beautiful

( Wife thinks im stupid , she dosnt understand )

    Help

  2. Oh and has anybody had issues with the X1 manifold not fitting with Edelbrock Rocker Covers, looks like i may have to machine or grind the Manifold, do you know how hard it was to find one of these original manifolds in Australia?

So i dont really want to machine anything

    i will PM you

Hey Jeffrey , the man is a perfect gentlemen and a surgeon when it comes to these old carbs

  6. Edelbrock started to repop these manifolds and also make a 6x2 linkage set up....maybe they have pics that you can use to help with your eelco.
I love x1s....look at my Avatar.

Wow, someone drilled a big hole in there, guess you could tap it and use it for vac***, on our setup we are grabbing it from one of the freeze plugs.

We used to to get va*** for the tans, dist, and provide a mount and va*** for the old wolf whistle.

I am running about the same setup on our coupe. I talked with Marty at Eelco for a long time about my linkage and he was very helpful, hard to get ahold of, but once I did, was helpful.

We are running ours with Cal Custom Valve Covers and they cleared fine, seems like the Edelbrocks would work also?

Anyway, the Eelco setup comes with some little brackets for the strombergs. I don't have them, but if you look at this photo you can see them in the upper right corner of the photo. Marty told me they mount on the horns.

I don't see why you would need to reverse all the linkage because you drive on the wrong side of the road?

PM me and I can tell you all I learned about the Eelco linkage. In my case I learned I have part of Eelco, parts of something else. But I can send you what ever photos you want, oh, and we have changed the linkage since those photos, I had it setup all wrong then.....

    Cheers

  9. Thanks man,

Love the coupe , i have attached some pics for you

And i will also PM you , would love to see some close pics on the back where you mounted it on the horns.

These are only very small thin plates , how does it support on the other side???

Seems it will only mount in the 2 holes and what about the other bracket??

Thanks for the help , i need it:confused:

  10. HotRodGuy, yes that big hole in the back will provide you with FULL manifold vacuum. Excellent for the booster or the the distributor vacuum can. If you have both, I would T it right at the fitting on the intake. Some folks T half way down the rubber line, I dont care for it that way, that's just me. What concerns me is that OTHER big hole up front in the water jacket on the p***enger side of the intake. See Rusty's pic, he has a temp sender in the hole closest to the head, you have what looks like another big hole drilled inboard of that, TR

  11. Yep , dont know what the hell thios hole is , maybe i can run another Temp gauge on the firewall of my 32? and use this hole for that one and the other one for the inside gauge?

Thanks for the heads up on that other big hole, i really needed somewhere for the booster

Hey do you have any ideas on how to get stubben studs out of the manifold?

I use Cobalt tip drill bits , ***anium Tip drill Bits , ezy out broke two sets.

Some of the old studs came out real easy the others i had to drill out etc.

Its like the metal is made from some sort of Alien Space Ship Metal:)

    Regards

  12. If you dont use that other hole up front, you might want to find a nice br*** core plug/freeze plug and press into there. If there are threads in there, you might have to drill it to the correct size. If you have a milling machine, I would use that and a boring head, that plug must be a tight fit. Or just screw in a nice plug, wont look as good though . It would almost look like it was meant to be there with the ones on either side. Now for the studs, you have it drilled to the largest and safest size without hurting the threads of the manifold, try and cave it in on one side. If you have a small die grinder, you can try and go up and down what's left of the I.D. of the stud with a small burr. Watch the grindings carefully, you can tell the steel from the aluminum, if you can grind a narrow slot up and down, then you can again try and cave in one side and peel it out of there with needle nose pliers. You might end up having to heli-coil it. Before you do that you can try the candle wax trick, that might get in there and then you can walk it out with the ez-out, TR

If you do loose the threads for the carb. stud I'll tell you how I fixed mine. I taped it out to the next size pipe thread. Then screwed in a br*** fitting with Locktight. Cut it off flush and drilled and taped it to the right size. Worked great and probably stronger than the aluminum.

I have a similar Edlebrock X1 6x2 and haven't yet installed my Eelco progressive linkage. The first 2 pictures are from another HAMBER's site, name escapes me so I apologise. I also have an Edelbrock 6x2 C97 log manifold but decided the X1 is more aesthetically pleasing.:D Edelbrock now repop these manifolds and linkages and hope that my Eelco will fit and look forward to seeing how you get on.

  15. Thanks guys, lots of good info there to help me out.

I tried to put this bracket on out of the eelco kit and it just wont work, when you bolt it up , it makes the linkage sit at a angle , which is just stupid.

man it would be nice to see a down angle shot at the back , or a real good close up of the back of a stromberg . from someone with the exact same set up , lots of shots on the side which is cool but would love the back area photo.

Or do i have to make my own brackets?

Any help with photos would be great:)

I can't help you out since I didn't get the brackets with my intake, I think the guy I buoght the intake must have tossed them since I got the intake with 94's.

I had already made a different bracket for my linkage, I thought that bracket in the photo was to hook the return spring to.... anyway, the mount we built works okay, there is a bit of flex in the back shaft, seems to be as much in the shaft itself as the bracket we made though.

You can make this. This cross over plate is strong and will not flex..

  18. Thanks Guys, Lots of info here, i tried mounting the brackets on but it wont fit around the carbie becasue the choke etc is all on the right side as you look at it from behind and the holes dont line up on the carb top the whole thing is just ****, why make something that wont fit is beyond me.

Stromberg97s bracket looks good , not sure if i have the skill to make that , but i will try:confused:

    Thanks:)

:confused:WARNING I wouldnt buy anything off eelco! I payed marty $820us on the 16th of April for a 6x2 intake, 6x2 carb linkage, and 6x2 fuel rail, I have only just got the manifold and nothing else but BS out of him!! Its just junk one is machined wrong and leans inward, and theres no carb or water outlet holes, If any one can have a word with that theiving BSer for me and get my parts that would be appreciated
