  4. Just a very rough idea of what I put together. Not professional (go figure) but at least it's a thought. Only the first few states are in color and indented. Maybe for an online only version.

  6. How 'bout calling it the "HAMB Road Atlas"?

    More suggestions...

    FLORIDA

Ft. Lauderdale: The Mai Kai. Since 1956, the supreme poobah of all tiki bars in the known universe. Expensive drinks, live Polynesian floor show.

Weekee Wachee: Weekee Wachee Mermaids. Oddball vintage roadside attraction featuring aquarium teeming with hot babes.

Orlando: Gatorland. Home of the cheesy Florida souvenirs.

St. Augustine: Osteens: Old family place with the best seafood I've ever had.

    IOWA

Sioux City: Tastee Inn & Out. Timeless drive in for Iowa "taverns" (loose meat burgers)

Lemars: Bob's Drive In -- the apex of taverns, written up in Food & Wine magazine (really!)

    WISCONSIN

Kenosha (I-94): The Brat Stop -- cheese, beer, sausage, live mullet bands. It don't get more Wisconsin than that.

Elkhart Lake: Siebkens Resort. Super German beer hall in '20s era resort hotel; lots of sports car racing memorabilia from Road America

that would be the Safe House. I had a friend that worked there for a while when he was in college. He still refuses to tell me what the password is... The entrance is in an alley, which makes it a bit hard to find, but it's worth checking out. nothing really car related though...

Nick, Do you know if the dairy Bar is still there? I'm about 25 miles from Thorp. I'd like to check it out. They also have the Thorpedo there and they have good food.

Funny, no one mentioned PORKY'S Drive Inn on University Ave, Just west of Snelling in Minneapolis, Mn. Everyone who goes to Back to the '50's at the State Fair Grounds ends up there at sometime through the Weekend.

    Canadian Hot Spots!

    Winnipeg, Manitoba

Red Top Drive Inn, on St. Mary's Rd in Norwood, been around since 1960. Best burger and shakes in town.

Rick's Hot Rod Diner, on Henderson Hwy, great place for breakfast or lunch. Stacks of car mags to read while you eat.

Nick's Drive Inn in Headingley. A Big, Big burger, you can't always get down.

Pony Corral on Pembina Hwy. South, Great food and atmosphere, Car show every Sunday, with over 300 cars rain or shine.

Buffalo Bills on Regent Ave. Car show every Sunday, music and draws. 150 cars or more.

    Red Deer, Alberta

Gasoline Alley on Hwy 2 South, cars every nite of the week.

Old school? You want old school? Here's the deal:

Forget that new "high speed" ferry in Milwaukee and drive up to Manitowoc and roll your car onto the SS Badger, a circa 1952 Ferry. Enjoy your trip across Lake Michigan and end up in Ludington. Ignore US31 and hop on "Pere Marquette Road" (Old 31, in service until the 1960s). It becomes Oceana Drive once you leave Mason County and then Whitehall Road when you get into Muskegon County. Plenty of "Old Road" flavor still around on it.

I intend to write a coffee table book about Old US 31 someday, sorta like all of the books you see on old Rte. 66.

Once you reach Montague, make sure you stop for lunch at the Dog 'n' Suds drive-in (that's a drive-in restaurant). I recommend the bacon double cheese deluxe, but would understand if you just had to try the chili dogs. Definitely wash it down with the root beer. Dog 'n' Suds used to be a national chain but is now largely gone. The one in Montague was built in 1963 and originally paralleled the White River. In the late 1990s they turned the structure to parallel the road, they also removed the dining room that had largely engulfed the original canopy.

Once you're full, drive down to Muskegon (Whitehall Road becomes Business 31 and ceases to parallel the old route once you're into Muskegon as the old business district became an enclosed mall in the 1970s and has since been torn down). Hang a left when you reach Sherman Boulevard, a right onto Getty and you'll find our very own four-screen drive-in movie theatre, the Getty Four. View the flick of your choice and enjoy the rest of your vacation in Michigan. I suggest the Pere Marquette beach while you're in town. You may also wish to continue down Old 31 (Grand Haven Road) into Grand Haven and Holland where the old road is still US 31 thanks to the political maneuverings of a Holland-born congressman back in the 1950s. Beware once you reach Ottawa County, these are very touristy ($$) areas with highly sensitive cops, so watch out when you're driving or cruising "the strip" in Grand Haven (the cruising scene is still alive down there, but is mostly ricers and kids in family cars).

    The past lives!

Frisko Freeze, Tacoma WA. A 30's gas station turned 50's gut-bomb and shake factory. Drive-in and walk up only. Everything is old school; the building, sign, food, even the worker's t-shirts. It beats Dick's in Seattle. I live within sight of the place.

Longhorn Saloon, olde tyme bar in Scenic South Dakota. Bulletholed ceiling sawdust covered floor, rank whiskey and good beer. If your touring the Badlands and are making your way to the Black Hills (or vice versa) this spot is right between my town of Interior and Tman's Rapid City on HWY 44. You'll be driving alongside the Badlands up to Scenic and you will be near the Southern (Untamed) Unit of the Badlands National Park.

Originally from Kansas City, New Yorker Calvin Trillin wrote a review featuring Winstead's burgers in the old Life Magazine in the 70's. Life was big time journalism, for those of you who weren't around in those days. Winstead's had a big copy of it posted in the lobby.

Playboy Magazine did a review about the same time, reaturing that other other KC icon, Bryant's BarBQ.
