What diameter is that balancer? I thought that the 327 balancer was a little bigger than the 283. I have a 327 size on my 283 in my '64. You might have to wait a bit for a guru to answer your question.
Yes, I've run into several early'64-65 327s with the small balancer....only the 400 sbc is externally balanced(damper& flexplate/flywheel)..i've used both the 283 and the 8" balancer on the 327s...NEVER use the 400 Balancer or flexplate or flywheel on anything but the 400...
Not sure of the dia but it seems like most of the 327 including my 63 327 has a much thinner dampner then the 350's Ed ke6bnl
All of the 283's i've had have had a 'hub' rather than a balancer. Very small in comparison to the 327, and to be honest dosn't even look like a balancer at all.. They fit the same, but are only about 1/2 to 5/8 thick at the pulley flange. I have used regular balancer's on them though without a problem..
i have mistaken the "balancer" as athat kooky little pully adapter... I have seen small ones on both stock motors.
On a similar note...My 62 327 does not have a bolt hole tapped in the crank to retain the balancer, has anyone had one come loose? Just kinda worries me about it jumping off and chewing up my radiator or worse.
yeah, they come loose. drill and tap it. (7/16 fine) i don't have to tell you to keep it straight, do i?
exactly what do you want to do? sbc balancers will all fit but there's different sizes and timing marks not to mention 400 sbc that are externally balance and will shake the **** out of the enging until the crank breaks...
trying to ascertain whether this is a 327 or 283 here..the date code is 1965..but it most definetly has a balancer like the picture above!! there is thread for a bolt but there wasnt one on it?!! yikes!! motor is fresh maybe 600 miles total.its in a 1958 Chevy.it has power Pak heads with a 2bbl?!!cant read the casting numbers while in the car!! i think its a 327 myself..my friend thinks otherwise...goin nuts!!!!!!!
Also has a spin on filter not a cartridge, nad the starter has a three bolt nose cone.not like you typical GM late model gig..
i see you have edited your profile , sorry to be a ***** , but your original info kinda rubbed me the wrong way...welcome i believe you are trying to figure out what size engine you have by the harmonic balancer on it...that may be hard to do , with a car that is 47 years old and who knows what modifications/changes has been done to it. you say the date code is 1965 , so the engine has been changed and the small balancer may have been put on ...the crankshaft having the threads for the retainer would sugest a later engine, but it may have been drilled and tapped... spin on oil fllter would also indicate a later engine , but adapters to put spin on oil filters on older blocks are available...power pack heads could have been switched...and the 3 bolt nose cone on the starter bolting to the original transmiission itself would not tell you what motor it is the only way you are going to know what engine you have for sure is to get the casting number off the back of the block...can you read it with the help of a mirror and flashlight?
Problem is the dam kickdown bracket is bolted down so tight I cant get it off to read the numbers or lay some clay on it to get an imprint...I knew that was the only for sure way,but figured some chevy guru might know something I didnt...lol!! ohhhhhhhhhh sheeit!! I'll cut that damn bracket off!! who needs a kickdown anyways?!! lol...
I had one come loose on a 327 once but I got it back on before it messed up the snout. I also remember some dirt track cars with it welded on because it wouldn't stay anymore.
option 2; there's a pad on the right front of the block.get the #'s off it and post 'em. one of us surely has a motors manual that'll have it in there. the last 2 or 3 letters is enough..
