Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by fordstandard, Nov 2, 2011.

  1. My feelings exactly convert tails to led find something cool to install led's in for the 3rd.
Better chance to be seen and save the car from some dumbass rear-ending you .
    Firm believer in led lights

I thought what he meant by "sub-standard" was sloppy, worn, not rebuilt. As far as there being "nothing wrong with the stock setup now", yeah it's rebuilt to like new condition, but just about every newer vehicle on the road in front of you weighs less and can stop in a much shorter distance with its power disc brakes. You're at a disadvantage, I'll bet you drive accordingly.

Many motorcycles have the brake light that pulses for a short time when first applied. It really grabs your attention. How about converting over to those?

First I used an old German helmet with several bullet holes in it, and drilled another one in the middle of the back and mounted my third brake light in it. Was cool, but didn't really fit my car scheme...
So next I took and old license plate holder with a '63 license plated in it and mounted this third brake lite to the top...
I like it and it will remain in my '63 Biscayne...
    Cheers....

You may not realize it but every day modern cars with LED Halogen 3rd 4th 5th brakelights, ergonamically designed placed and computer enhanced get rear-ended. Putting a 3rd brake light on an old hot rod does virtually nothing. When it's time, you get hit. Period. In the mean time, most look really bad. In my unprofessional opinion you are more likely to get hit in a hot rod with a third brakelight as the drivers behind you will be so mesmerized by the awful looking red globe stuck on your car that they will be drawn to it like moths to a flame.

F--K tradition light the rear up and be safe. Use the brightest you can find. A guy I know has a row of leds across the underside of his rear body like they use on pickups. They are pretty much invisable unless lit up then WOW.

  16. I'm with badshifter on this one, the insurance lots are full of rear-ended late models.
If people didn't see the lights on them, why do you think they will see the small tail lights and maybe a cutsey third brake light arrangement on a hot rod.

  17. so slightly off topic here. but i do ride my 05 sporty alot this summer i added what we will call a prisum to the headlight. i pulled out the bulb put the prisum in and put the bulb back in. It added other colors and made me stand out more. i have noticed that even in broad daylight people are not pulling out in front of me. i can only imagine that extra lights or brighter lights in the back will help.

That is awesome, I will have to make one. Where did you find the "fink"?

i don't care how worried I was about getting rear ended, I could not bring myself to hang LED lights all over it. Leave it in your driveway and sit in a lawn chair and look at it.

  23. OK this is way off topic but if you want to get folks attention and don't mind looking a little high tech they make an inertia switch for brake lights now. On hard braking it causes your brake lights to flash on and off onstead of just being a steady light.

getting back to it what about a couple of hoola girls, with LEDs scattered around in their skirts that would come on with the brake light and if you were on a bumpy road they would be wiggling all over the place.

One I used to see at the shows was a cutom that they had put the scoop on the back of the roof, like on an old Olds. They filled the scoop with a third light.

When this thread started I had just gotten the parts to put the third brake light into the roof of my '51 GMC. It isn't finished yet but you get the idea.

The roof skin is a hood off of a '62 Ford Falcon, the lights are from a '99 Chevy Astro van. The light cost less than $10, the hood was somewhat more. Ok it was a lot more.

The LEDs are clear when off and so are not obvious, they are pretty bright when they are on and so I'm hoping that the folks behind me get the idea.

  25. Even with brighter bulbs and reflectors, the small tail lights on our '30s cars are not going
to get the attention of distracted drivers. I'm thinking of something along the lines of portable/temporary that attaches with a magnet between the back window and trunk. Maybe a '40s/50s truck "STOP" accessory light. Simply unplug and remove upon arrival...

  26. My 6v '51 Pontiac lights are all but useless...you can bet there will be an additional light in the rear window when the 12v conversion is done...along with non traditional seat belts...

Hows about a Impala roof scoop.

  28. Or a Claymore mine on the back bumper covered with reflective tape. That'll wake up those idiots who were texting instead of paying attention.
