Whitewall question...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Longroof64, May 15, 2005.

  1. I say they each should give a set to Ryan for using his bandwidth to selll their tires! Let him decide whos tires are better and post the results here.

Awee... yeah... I was always bad at reading. I think you nailed the tire sizes and that's hard to do on cars like ours.

I'm currently running Coker radials on the front of the '38, but am going to go with black wall bias firestones up front and pie crust slicks on the rear as soon as I can find the proper sizing.

Tman - good idea... See how long either set could stand up to my small block and piss poor driving at***ude.

I met with some resistance that size combo. Too big in the back (is that possible?) and too small in the front. I'm glad I stuck to my guns. I think they look better on Dad's car than mine. Maybe that's just the car though. ;) Dad wants some Firestone blackwalls now in sizes a little closer together.

What are your choices on the slicks sizes?

Well... I had g78-15s recapped into slicks by Hurst before they sold to NW Speed. They currenlty measure 7.5" wide and 28" tall... I'd like to find a similar size, but nobody seems to be set up to make em anymore. Just as well though as I don't have the dough right now.... Currently running blackwalls on the back and whitewalls on the front as my old whitewall slicks were toasted after the HAMB Drags this year.

Dbtires, 70machone, Mustang Ron, GM... (why does one need so many names?)

All I can say is that you are apparently obsessed with us Ron. You seem to mention us (although in some lame way or negative light) in about every post. You even used our trademarks on your website to draw our customers to your website. Truthfully?

Patrick serves on our great sales team and all 25 of them represent me. I am proud of all of them. They don't slam others like you are allowed to do.

Truthfully huh? How about the post on the shoeboxford discussion forum where you posed as a Coker customer who was unhappy trying to rile the forum up in anger? I would say that approaches dishonesty. Borderline fraud and product disparagement.

You should ask Mr. Chapman, the owner of your company if he approves of your tactics of product disparagement, slander and mud slinging.

I am a gentleman. I don't disparage others just for my own gain nor do I allow my employees to do so. Why don't you just mind to your business and not ours.

Thanks for likening me to a kid Ron, I have been around a long time and enjoy being spoken of as younger any time. At least I don't "name call" like I remember kids did when they were grammer school.

All the best to you Ron,

    Corky Coker

Does anyone know who makes " candy cl***ics"? I bought a set of these from a local shop, and they've been great on my caddy.

Jimmy... Candy Cl***ics were produced by Dunlop at one time...am not sure it they are still available but you should try Fairmont Tire in LA. They were the ones that did em at the time. They were originally the Remington molds that were re-engraved I think.

Best of luck in your search.

Over the years, I've heard both good and bad about both Diamondbacks and Cokers. There's so much tire information/disinformation floating around and being repeated, it all blurs into a negative din of noise. I think it's important enough to the tire buyers of the HAMB, I'd love to see an honest head to head tire comparison test of these tires. I'm talking the most common sizes used by HAMBers for their hotrods and their customs. Considerations like ride quality, quality of the white surface, out of balance issues and frequency of tire separations would all be taken into account. It's been proven time and again, compe***ion breeds a better product.

Here's my '55 Mercury when it had a bit of a rake. Sort of like yours.

The tires are 670-15 Allstates on the original rims. Your 14 inchers on the front bring the car down nicely, but they don't fill the wheel opening all that well. They look too small for the car. But, that's just my opinion. :)

Well, the whole idea is that I want some tires to help out with that... that tire is a 185/65 14 just to be able to roll it around... there's a **** tire on the other side of the front too, but that's a 195/75 14... so I have a pretty sweet side-to-side rake going on too! :)

I definitely agree that the one in the pic is too small, and to be honest the one on the p***enger front may be a bit large... that's why I'm looking for the happy medium that'll look "right"... I just don't want to go through the headache of trying to get 15" wheels to fit on the fronts, because I didn't do the disc brake conversion and I'm too lazy to go measure for the lug pattern... plus I really don't want to search for/find/buy new wheels right now... I just want some tires that'll fit and look okay...

Longroof Heres a pic of big and littles. The rear are old nylon WW dont know what kind. They are 15" x 31" tall the fronts are little cokers but are also 15".
When youre running on the freeway for long periods they do warm up. Alot of load for a small tire.

I like a little rake on a custom, but why are you stuck on the 14" wheels"? You should be able to find 15'ers to clear your brakes, cheap and easy.

One of the main rules in sales is to keep the focus on your product. Don't ever run-down your compe***or, no matter how bad they are. I'm in the market for vintage tires. I don't know much about the diamond back products, but the sales guy puts me off a bit.

Not exactly stuck on 'em... here's the deal:

I work a 40 hour a week job, then 24 hours a week on the weekends, and am a grad student... I barely even have time to find tires, except with the wonderful internet all I gotta do is click and order... ****m I barely have time to eat or sleep!

I just want to go through as little as possible to get the car on the road... that's all...

I bought a ser of 800-14 silvertowns. Ive put about 700 mi. on them so far amd just noticed the whitewall starting to crack on the right rear of my Biscayne. I also noticed a sight shimmy the other day while taking a corner and down****ing to 3rd, do not know if it has to do with the tires. I have been using them on gravel as well and pavement in order to "work harden" the tread compund a little to make it wear a little longer. I have a freind who owns a fleet of trucks, he buys michelins that the factory use for testing, he runs them in his dump trucks and claims he gets a lot more mileage out of those than when he uses "green" tires that have not been broken in.
I do not as of yet know how long my mexi-towns will wear. However I did run a set of 78 series cokers on my '50 and got good mileage out of them. (Despite daily burnouts) As a matter of fact, those tires were pretty tough! I traded them to my buddy and he ran then on his '64 for quite a few more thousand miles, to the point that there were "extra" whitewalls showing where the piecrust once was, they were still holding air fine the last time i saw them, they were headed to the junkyard on an '82 olds turd.

The nest time I buy whites, I am going to go with either Remington candy cl***ics or Universals. (Universaltire.com) The Candy cl***ics are still made and available through Hot Rod Hank's. Universal has a very impressive website and great prices. Their bias-plies look WAY better than Cokers in my opinion and appear to be a better quality tire and they have a tougher carc*** like the Remingtons.
