I was reading the owners manual in the Cobra Torch website (imagine that!) and it said that when welding in the forehand position, you should keep the flame out front of the puddle instead of "walking" the puddle. They said the puddle will follow by capillary action. I learned to OA weld by pushing the puddle. Does this technique of dragging the puddle in the forehand position actually work better for welding sheet metal? Can you see the puddle ok? Even the videos I've watched on YouTube appear to be pushing the puddle with the Henrob. Thanks for your experienced Feedback.
Yes it works. A little patience goes a long way. move the flame in small circles as you advance it and the puddle will follow. I have had mine 25 years, works great Omar
And that's how you weld sheet metal with it. Huh. I guess that's the part that everyone has to "unlearn". Is that correct?
yes - you can even go from bottom to top of a panel vertically if you are careful. doesnt make sense, but its true Omar
Well, I worked at it over two weekends and can make a respectable weld on 20 ga. 18 is much easier....but you knew that. After finally getting to where I could do a reasonable weld with the Henrob, I tried my Tig. No contest. It's like comparing a butcher knife to a scalpel. I can make much better welds with the Tig, as long as I can get to it and still use my foot pedal. I'll keep the Henrob but it won't be my main method of welding sheet metal.
