Ok FNG asking a question Well here is my 1946 Cadillac that I just picked up. It’s been in storage for 30 years. I am trying to get the tires aired up to roll it off the trailer and into my garage. Good interior, almost nonexistent rust, and only set me back 2 grand The biggest problem I have with it is the engine has seized up. I filled the cylinders with diesel, then hooked a line to each cylinder and put a 140psi to each of them from my air compressor. Then refilled them with more diesel. I have used diesel before and had good luck with it Am going to let it set for a week or two and see if I can break it loose. It has a “49” OHV Cadillac engine in it now, not the L head it came with Sense it isn’t the OE motor I was thinking of what I can replace it with if it doesn’t free up. I could rebuild it but if I go that far I want more power SBC with a 700r4 would be the easiest, but a Cadillac motor like a 472 / 501 would be a torque monster I haven’t researched a 4 speed for them yet. What do you guys think? [/IMG] I corrected the year of the engine its a 49 not a 47 car is still a 46......my bad
Sorry pic didn't load for me..... *edit now it did* that car looks clean as hell! In my opinion keep it Caddy ! Nice!!
Beautiful Car. Doesn't really need much to be the perfect ride. Personally I'd keep with the original drivetrain but either way it'll be a head turner for sure. Best of luck. James
absolutely stick with a Cadillac of some vintage. You car likely has a dual-range hydromatic, so why not maintain that and find an engine that can be mated to it? btw, NICE SCORE!
Looks like a cool car man. i love the old caddies (pre 57). i say just go with the motor that you can afford, im swapping a 350 into my poncho because i cant afford to rebuild the pontiac motor in it. Have you considered some sombrero hub caps? i think they'd fit the look of your car a lot better.
I have 4 of the ones you see on it (were on it when I picked it up) they are coming off I found 3 of the standard ones and one sombrero in the trunk, just got to make a set so I will start hunting
That is one sweet looking Caddy for sure . You didn't get hurt at all on the price at all . OK , here is what I would do if it was mine . I would pull the engine , pull the oil pan and remove the crank . Then pull the heads and bang the pistons out if possible . Even if the pistons break you will still need to buy new pistons anyway since you will have to get the cylinders re-bored . In the end I would do my very best to keep that Cadillac engine in there ! If not go with another Cadillac engine from that time frame . Please don't stick another brand of a GM engine in there ! That car deserves to have a true Cadillac engine under that hood ! In the end that is one great looking Cadillac you have ! A true time piece ! Keep us posted on what happens with the engine . Just my opinion ! Retro Jim
They didn't make an overhead Caddy motor till 49', but either way keep it Caddy, and I would keep an auto in that big Luxury Yaght. I know I wouldn't want to be bangin gears in a luxury sedan.
I know where there is a 41 flathead and trans that run good. If your interested let me know. I sold the engine to another guy but I know he still has it.
Sweet score. Really looks clean. If you don't go stock OE doesn't much matter. A Caddy lump would be cool if it's affordable for you. I've been putting SBC's in cars for 44 years now for a reason ....inexpensive reliable HP.
Sandwich shop owner down the street from me, drives a 61 Cad CDV with a SBC. But there are adapters, for the Cad motor to mate to a 700R4. I won't build a car without OD.
X1000000000 on keeping it all Caddy. awesome score as well,.. what about a mid fifties 365/390 with factory duals or triples? very cool,...
I will post a pic and get the # off of the engine. I know some one on here will know what it is thanks
My mothers 47 is a series 75 so its the biggest next to the limo. Right now I took the entire drive line out of the 72. The ****** is a turbo 400. Not sure what ratio the rear axle is but it is a exposed drive shaft. Had to make my own mounts obviously, but it all seems to fit well. For a front end I went with a fat man Fab stub(mustang II style) so I did remove any factory frame clearance issues. But the rest of the frame is original.Hope to have it on the road by May of this year.
