I agree. Some guys will throw a cummins in an s10 and piece together a shit body with skull on it and a mike's hard lemonade sign on the door. That's fine too. But then they get mad when they go to the "traditional" hot rod show and they're turned away! "What? But I used what I had, like the old days!"
Turns out there were no S10's and cummins in the old days. But they shouldn't get mad. I wouldn't expect a real traditional car to be accepted at a 4x4 show.

I have some friends with real ratty cars. The kind that get blasted out of here. Do I hate on those dudes? No. It's not worth it or fun. Still I'm going to go the extra mile on my personal car because that's what I want. But I also want people to respect it and enjoy it too. I'm not going to lie about that. So I guess I do want people to like it. Nothing wrong with that.

Hello I'm Dirtpoor and I'm a reformed rat rodder.I thing my lowest point was when I was going to use rusted steel over new steel.I use hide in my garage at night and look at RR magazines and listen to music I hated. Then like a shinning ray of chrome and shiny paint the HAMB showed my a better way.I no longer had to leak gallons of gas or be fat black in my soul.Yes brothers and sisters there is a way to the promise land of pride in your work and using grinders to grind and not decorate your car.And on the 8th day Ryan did give us the HAMB and the people were happy,

  8. Young Man, there is "NO" clairification. It's all Opinyon and yours is all that matters. People are going to label you based on there Ignorance the rest of your life, get used to it. Back when I had hair I was called a Hippie just because I preferred to spend my money on my Car instead of a barber. Just last summer I drove my 51 to a local event and over heard some one call it "one of those Rat Rods". While at B--ville with my Model A I heard someone say "Now that's one kool Hot Rod" . Now look at those photos of both cars. Your making something out of Nothing. Just be glad you have a car to play with and get on with it, Screw what others think.
Noe if you really want opinyon's go ahead and post some photos of what your working on. That will really mess you up if you care what others think. Just get back to work, you'll be fine.

the truth that a lot of people find it so hard to admit for some strange reason. Well put, that man, with a big amen from me.

Use your imagination is key. Car shows, magizines (Hot Rod, Car Craft, Rod & Custom), close your eyes and picture it. Express yourself, your ideas.
    Mercy, it's not here.

If you build your project car with the best parts you can find or afford then you are building a traditional hot rod just like the guys did back in the day. many (not all) of the dicks on here are referring to period correct cars. they talk the talk but when it actually comes down to it check their cars out. disc brakes, radial tires, alternators not generators. the list goes on. So build you car safe and fun and listen to the good advice and ignore the rest.

No one will ever agree on this. They're just different people with different views laying claim to the same term.

So to be clear on your point- A Model A with a '85 buick v6, '79 cadillac steering column and seats, '86 fiero tail lights, and American turbo wheels would be a Traditional Hot Rod because the kid that built it wanted one and got all those parts for free. Not trying to be a dick. Just thinking hypothetically..

I sure lots will disagree with me but a tradition is following someones footsteps If your grandmother made the best apple pies and you wife made pies like grandmaw then I see your wife following a tradition NOW is your wife milked the cow and grew the wheat picked the apples in your orchard then baked them in a dutch oven then your wife would be making a period correct pie. If your grandpap got drunk on every saturday and you get drunk on every saturday you are following a tradition of cource your drinking bud light and he drank corn squeezins so its not period correct my 2 cents

  19. wow i like this. I kind of wondered me some things. There are alot of people here that get really pissed really quickly. ITS NOT TRADITIONAL. ITS NEWER THEN 64. please calm down. we are hot roders we always change our cars. they wernt good enough stock. we personalized them. any traditioanlly speaking. i have seen other get ridden out of town on a rail, scolded and schuned becuase of modern power plants in their rides. i wasent alive back in the day but i dont think they had air ride technology then. if im wrong thats fine. at the rist of pissing people off. arnt rat rods just the retarted cousin of hotrods. its a hot rod but cheap. do with what you have...should they be safe yes. most defenitly. but we have people on here with hotrods that are talking about not running wipers. rainx and luck. i tell you what if anyone regarless of the kind of car it is should hit my ride becuase they didnt have wipers or breaks im gona be pissed.

i really dont mean disprespet to anyone but let the kid build what he wants and enjoy it. we are all differnt, we have a differnt vision of what looks good of what we like. im gona say it...i like rat rods.(pause for insults and fruit throwing) however i also like shinny and chrome. i like a product that looks like it a car and not henry fords house of ill refute. but there is something sort cool about rat rods. and if you have a bunch of stuff lying around its cheaper to put it together then to find all the pieces to put a car together correctly.

ok again im sorry if pissed you off or disrespected you. but lets all play niceand encourage others. just becuase something is a little differnt or out of the norm doesnt mean it is a bad thing.

Its like you said not everyone is going to agree on this and that ok! But either your all in or all out, a 31 coupe with a desoto hemi clutch flight and bias ply tires with new aluminum intake and new lake style wheels is no more traditional than the vehicle you mentioned I talking about the holier than thou hypocrites who know it all trash the young up and coming hot rodders who ask simple honest questions

I'm probably one of those dicks. I don't mean to be, it's really about terminology and what I thought the hamb was about. I'm never harsh. So I'll not comment anymore.

    I do walk the talk.

  22. To all of you who posted "who cares what anyone else thinks" type comments; you're right, but the OP asked...

So, coming on to a website that EVERYONE knows is about pre 64 cars done the way they would have been pre 64 (ish:D) and bashing the guys who bash late model parts and rat rods is kinda out of line, don't you think?

I'll be the first to admit, I'm not a traditional rod guy. My stuff is out on the event horizon for this site, but I appreciate the efforts of the guys who are serious about building good quality hot rods "the way grandma would have made"... If you're gonna hate on the trad guys, take your smack and sit down, because it's THEIR forum...

I agree with you on that. Hazing to a certain degree is funny and fine if it's done in good humour with a point. Too often these days it's just "get the fuck out" which sucks. Doesn't help too many guys along.

Unfortunately this website has had alot of shit talkers and drama starters that sign up and get banned immediately (rightfully so). They have kind of ruined it for the new guys that just want to ask and learn. But if anyone wonders why the r*t r*d term is so taboo, it's because of those guys..
