Yep, my Mercury has power windows. Any suggestions of switches that would be been available before 1955? So far I've heard Lincoln and Jaguar.
I think an old style car should use the ones that you put the original window cranks on, then only you know you have power windows. I don't know who makes them. saw them in a magazine.
I checked around and on Ebay, Cadillacs had them too. So I think if a custom had power windows added in the mid 50's it's plausible that someone could have used switches from an expensive top of the line car like a Cadillac: 1957:
I was looking at a '56 Caddy for sale, that had electric peepers. An issue I am having with my car is I'm still running 6-volt, AND possitive ground. That limits me to what I can do.
Thanks it sounds like that Olds does have them too, though I can't find any pics quick online. I had some g'awful black plastic switches, so I have to do something.
Hey PSJ. I used '55 T-bird switches in my coupe which have a nice bezel and chrome switches. My brother's '56 Vicky has the same set-up but has black bakelite switches (which will interchange with the T-bird ones). The advantage to the Vicky ones would be that you will have a gang of 4 on the drivers door as opposed to the 2 switch setup I used. -Dave
look on ebay. search "195* window switch" the * will search all years in the 50's or search "chrome window switch" lots of good stuff will come up
my Parents had a 51 Mercury Convertible back in the mid 50s with power windows. They weren't common like today. Back then, people didn't waste their money like they do today. They were more frugal.
That's a great idea too, didn't think of that - Thanks! My current dash is very street rodder, so I'll have to figure out what will go with what.
I have a full set of PW switches from a 55 packard if you need em, was going to throw them up on fleabay. 4 switch master and then singles for the other 3 widows. I can get pics tomorrow night if you are interested.
I used the AutoLogic window crank switches on my sedan because I wanted to keep my original crank handles. They have been perfect now for many years and a bunch of miles. One caution though...if you give someone a ride make sure they know how to open the window before they break a wrist trying to CRANK the window down.
I'm not sure what these are. Maybe someone will recognize them. They are on a later version of the Bettancourt / Zupan Mercury.
You could also use the switches from Hotronics (Autoloc has knock offs...I would go with the originals from Hotronics) that got in each door behind the panel and have a shaft that comes through and used the window knob. That's what I will use in mine when I redo the interior. It doesn't give you control of all windows from the driver's door and you have to open each window individually, but it looks like you don't have power windows at all
I don't mind the look of power window switches at all. In fact if customs were all about impressing folks, I can see where adding power windows would be considered cool.
Those look cool. I would have used something like that. Oh yea, I looked up my reciepts, my switches ARE Hotronics...not Autologic. No wonder they've lasted all these years.
Didn't read all the posts so someone may have said this already but my friend had a 55 Chrysler Imperial with power windows.
