If it's not one thing it's another.I was out in the garage all day working on the brakes, not counting the couple trips to the parts store before they closed.I just finished bleeding the brakes got in to start the car and check them out when I lost all power. The dash lights came on and the engine had just started to turn over when all at once the dash lights went out and the engine stoped. The battery was charged and everything was hooked up. I had had it running for a while just a little earlier. I checked out all the wires and fuses and could'nt find anything. I unhooked the positive battery cable from where it goes to on the fender. I do'nt know if this is the cut-out realy or some other sort of regulator or what.I put it back on and then the power was back.I do'nt know if taking the wire off did something or it was something else. I do'nt know shit about electrical stuff, anyway I went to start it up again a little later and it started and ran for a few seconds then it all died again.I tried messing with the thing on the fender again but it did'nt help.I am running a GM one wire alternator , I ditched the generator last fall. The voltage regulator is still mounted on the fire wall also.Any ideas or help would be great, I am trying to get it ready for Billet Proof next weekend.
you didn't say if it was a chevy or a ford...reason I ask is the plugs on the firewall on chevies where the under hood harnesses plug in wiggle loose. It' s happened to me a couple times. I even helped a guy on the side of the road with it. All ya do is turn on the headlights and jiggle the plugs till the lights come on. I think GM thought it would keep driving exciting or something. Good luck!
Like Scraper said, check the main wiring lug, that plugs in the back of the fuse block. The least bit if jostle to those wires, could cause a headache.
could be something as simple as a bad connection at the battery terminals, take off and clean both terminals and clean the battery posts, and if they're the type of terminals where the wire is clamped into the terminal with screws, then take the wires out and clean up all that too.
It's an Olds Dynamic 88. I checked the brakes and they did'nt work yet . I figured I'd have to bleed them some more. I had to fix some leaks anyway. I also changed a couple of lines, the flares were'nt very good. The battery terminals are clean.
Olds- GM, should be the same type deal. Sorry for being so specific in brand. I grew up around muscle cars and those guys are almost as bad as Bloods and Crips, man. I guess Mopars would be VL's. Anyway...Did ya get it goin'?
Not yet. I plan on thrashing on it again in the morning .I need to get it going . Every time I talk to some one about Billet Proof they say they want to ride there with me. It's a big car but damm, I think someone will be riding in the Jimmy Hoffa suit.
I only left you alone for a couple of hours and everything has gone to hell. WTF? You better have that thing going by Billetproof because I am not going to cruise there in the Neon. Maybe you should do a post for an emergency thrash. Remind people that if you are not at the show that they will be missing some really good photos. Well I gotta go sit on my ass and watch some boob toob and play with the kids and then maybe take a nap, but your ass better be in the garage. your loving brother Springer
If your absolutely positive your fuses are good. (Check them all with a tester) Then it has to be a main power connection either at your battery, grounds to engine or body, or battery to ignition connections. Take a tester and trace your power from your battery to all the terminals its connected to, including your solenoid and voltage regulator. I'd guess the battery power wire to your ignition switch.
Kind of got it fixed. The fuse block was loose. It was missing a screw on one side. I put a screw in it then turned the key and I have power again, but !! For some reason now the car is'nt getting any power to the starter. I turn the key to start it and nothing .
Check the wiring plugs on the engine side of the firewall, on my 60 El camino there are two, one on driver's side at the fuse block and one in the center behind the distributor. The center one is where the starter wire is located. Both plugs can work loose and leave you wondering what is going on (or not going on as the case may be).
