Anyone take an old AD big truck (like a 1 1/2 on up) and turn it into a pickup? I have an old neglected 51 Chevy dump truck in the driveway. I've been wanting an older pickup so I had the idea of taking my big truck and turning it into a 3/4 ton truck by swapping out the big truck axles for stock 3/4 ton units. It has an 8 foot dump box which would be taken off and replaced with either a flatbed or a regular box. It's pretty short which makes it sorta useless as a dump truck. Any tips or projects any one wants to share would be welcome
-I'd think your best bet all around would be to pull the cab and drop it on a later ch***is. Not sure what the budget is, but that would sure be the simplest solution and modernize the running gear in the process.
Nah, I want to keep the old school feel. I like the simplicity of a straight axle plus swapping front and rear axles for pickup versions seems to me to be the laziest way to go about any sort of conversion. My budget is what ever I can sell or s**** the big truck stuff for in exchange for the various lighter duty stuff.
Are the front wheel openings the same on the man size and fairy size ones? I think the man ones may have a larger mouth for the truck wheels. I have a 2 tonne
A guy on the Stovebolt Page posted a link to pictures of his 2-ton pickup http://s1231.photobucket.com/albums/ee502/dvzdeathtrap/ Maybe not exactly what you had in mind... but still a cool idea, if executed well. Personally, I like it.
Anyone else have some examples. I want to turn it into a 3/4 ton but a big wheel truck is an interesting concept.
