After I sell my Model A Pickup project(see my ad as to why I am selling) I am looking at building a fun Flathead powered Track T. I have a line on a nice 1948 Flathead with trans for a fair price(no I will not tell you were). I have a '46-'48 Truck rear end that I am going to use(after I freshen it up). How hard is it to redo the '48 trans to an Open drive line? What parts do I need to redo the trans? Any articles on here?
You will need the open drive trans housing and output shaft. I am sure someone here has done it without these parts....see if they chime in.
I had one of these setups 40 years ago. It was a cast plate incorporating trans mount tabs , speedo drive and a recess for a lip seal that replaced the equivalent drive plate on the closed drive transmission. The output shaft that came with it had a polished surface for the seal to seal on and a splined end for the driveshaft to slide onto. The whole rig was OEM equipment on the 48-50 pickup.
The open drive on any open drive early trans will bolt up, I converted a 49 F1 side shifter to closed drive by changing the tail housing only, so I don't see why you can't do the opposite, after all it is only a 6 spline output shaft, I believe I have 1 left, housing that is!
