Help me wire the gen and voltage regulator

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by roadstar, May 30, 2005.

  1. I"ve been doing streetrods,?Yeah I said streetrods  With One wire alternaters for so long now, I think I forgot how to wire up this gen and voltage Reg in the 32 sedan. I probably have a diagram somewhere but the HAMB has been known to solve a problem as simple as this faster than I could get back out to the garage.

I't basic 12v neg ground, using the 12v gen from a 57 chev and a new v reg.

So, the mad thrash is on with this car.

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Somehow I thought this would be an easy one

Maybe I need to say please :D

Hey Rudy!Pretty simple stuff. From the pos side of the batt. run a wire to the Batt. terminal on the reg. The A, or armature post on the gen. is wired to the Gen. term on the reg. the F or field post on the gen. is wired to the feild term. of the reg. Use a good ground wire to the G or ch***is of the reg. And of course the G or ground post of the gen goes to a frame ground. Remember to polorize the generator when you fire it up for the first time. connect a wire between the gen. and bat. terminals, for just a second.:D Sparky

the terminals on the generator will say "F" and "A" they go to the "F" and "A" terminals on the regulator."B" ges to the battery, use a big red 10 gauge wire.run another big red 10 gauge wire through the firewall to your ignition switch.

  5. Ok Now we are getting somewhere. I was hoping that it was as easy as matching up the F(field) and the A (armature) on each. And the Batt to the batt of course.

Now, I have seen a condenser used on the generators, there is none on this one. Is it nessary? ANd what does it actually do. I know the early cars had a condenser on the coil too. Anybody care to clue me in on the use of condensers.

Thanks Sparky, and Yorg for the help.

I got just the opposite problem - I am wiring my first one wire Alternator. Roadstar help out with this!

  8. Most important of all -when it starts up and AINT charging..:) ....slap a screwdrivewr across the two terminals of the Generator for a second- and WHAMMO-you are now POLARIZED!!:D

  9. This I know :D Depending on the output, a 10 guage wire from the main Batt term**** on the starter to the Alt and your done. When using a big 100 amp alt, I will use a 8 guage wire. IT's almost too easy.
