same- f-1 truck trans.not sure if the 6's came 4 speed

  4. I believe your 3 speed is non-synchro first? Also the 4 speeds from the same trucks are non-synchro first? I would consider a T-5 instead. Full synchro and nice shifting, plus OD so you can actually drive on freeway with the engine not screaming.

thankyou much for the info, i'll look into it .

  7. Stock 4 speeds in those trucks are not synchronized in ANY gear....

I'd keep the 3 speed or swap in a T5.

How about the 3 onatree? The '52 F1 I'm getting looks to have been a 6 before the Y-block was installed, column shifter. Probably non-syncro first gear, and fairly light duty, but good for a beater?

most likely 3 sp. when putting in a t5 is it bolt on or some modification or extra parts needed? i kinda picky and originalist.is the t5 from the 40's or 50"s ford f1's?

  10. No, T5's are a late model 5 speed from an S-10 and require an adapter....but still a popular swap.

MeanGene.....my truck has the three on the tree. It works fine, but has a wide ratio. I have a t-5 ready to put in.

Thats what I was getting at,,wouldn't be too bad learning to double clutch but first in those 4 spds are real low [slow]..

  12. Correct me if needed but I thought F1 four speeds were syncro in 23&4.
Fourth gear is direct drive. Just don't use granny.

  13. No the truck 4sps are NOT syncro in ANY gear. Not yelling just clarifing.LOL
Rebuild the 3sp and put a nine inch in with a better gear ratio. The stock gearing in the truck is 3:92,put a nine inch in (easy swap) with a better gear 3:23 or so.It's less work than the t5 swap, the t5 of course is a much better trans.

You wouldn't gain anything switching to a stock style four speed except the ability to crawl though the fields in 'granny' or pull stumps. I've got one to put behind my 254 Six that is going in a roadster but I don't care that it doesn't have full syncros and will probably make a bunch of noise. I'd say to rebuild the stock three speed, it isn't hard and the parts should be readily available. Plus guys on here are hunting that gear box every day to go behind their flatheads with open drive rear ends.

I was debating the same thing in my 53 but I have a v8. I was told with the 3 speed and a 9" using a 3.23 or comparable first begins to be an issue since its non-synchro. With the gearing you need to get in 1st as 2nd bogs down too much. I can not say first hand but heard it from multiple people who claimed they had done it.

I ended up coming to the choice of either do a stock 4 speed and a 9" as you get more gears to balance out a 3.23 or something similar (i was think 2.79 as 1st gear is so step) or keep the stock rear and do a t5 swap.

After hunting for a 4 speed speed and saw prices I am saving for a t5. Again I do not know first hand just my experiences.

  16. 4 speeds up to 1951 were non syncro, in 52 they went to full syncro. I would leave the 3 speed, you can get any part for it as it is the same basic tranny as an early ford 3 speed (39-later) but open drivelive.

a buddy of mine is running a t 5 in his 51 f1 for about 10 years, mild flatty, and that thing is excellent on the road. he runs it 70 75 mph all day long no problems. if you want pm me ,i will ask what rear and what ratio hes running. i think its the only way to go if your running a flathead.
