I wouldn't put a Carson style top on a '54 Olds. Those early to mid 50's Olds are nice looking cars and look really good with a mild chop.I think you will loss a lot of this beauty with a Carson Top,especially considering the rear window. Here's a pic of a '56 Olds I already posted on here before.I know it's not a '54,but they look similar.

Regarding my comment about 4-doors.I see no reason to put a Carson style top on an Olds Hardtop Coupe. It's not seldom seen, especially in your country, people start building a car from a 4-door and convert it into a 2-door killer kustom.Considering the work involved to chop a 4-door steel roof (especially Sedans with posts) and make it look nice,a Carson style top is a good idea but since you have a 2-door Hardtop Coupe,I wouldn't go that Carson Top route.Of course this is only what I think and of course you can build whatever you want to and if you really want to do it,I'd suggest to make the top look more like a Convertible top which isn't padded that much.

Pony,I understand what you are talking about and I think you are on the right way. It's cool to see you don't take our comments that serious and they surely aren't meant to do you any harm.We just want to point you in the "right" direction and whenever you should find some time to redo the top, check out the link listed below. It might be of some help.I think you have the tallent to build such a top,you already built one.It only has the "wrong" shape...

if you want something different, maybe you would like a kaiser roof grafted on there? could make a cool sweep, alot of work to transplant maybe but could be something i've got a 1952 kaiser manhattan that i wanna chage the top on to makesomething different and an mid fifties olds roof could be cool

the kaisers got quite a cool sweep to them, you know henrik forsman from övik, graftet an kaiser roof on his 1956 eldorado

Get some photos of a '54 Olds convertible and begin altering the photos until you get the look you like. Then do it to your 2 dr. HT

Kopperhead,I think a pic says more than thousand words.Found a nice '54 Olds on Ebay a moment ago and photochopped it the way I think they look best. Those mid 50's Olds are really beautiful cars.Wish the car would be mine...

Why do you want to put a Carson Top on there ? I know they are not the easiest cars to chop (curved gl***) but even with a Carson Top you have to cut the windshield or recess the gl*** into the firewall.I think they look dynamite with the steel roof and the stock side trim and two-tone paint works very well too. Also had frenched the headlights before but they suddenly looked too small.

    I know of a chopped two-tone green '54 Olds 2-door Sedan. Beatnik car,I believe from the East Coast.Anyone has a pic ?

You rock, Pony. Good choice on ditching the wire caps, and remember, photoshopping is easy, building **** is hard. You get my respect for actually building the top instead of just ********ting about how you could do it. Now, since you know how to put them together, the next one should be easy, right?

None of the carson tops pictured on this post really nail it for me. If I ever did a carson top on a 4 door which I would not,It would have the same roof line as one on a convert with a ton of attention to making the a pillars look like a convert which in the case of a 52-54 ford would require a Vic or convert a pillar set up including the vent windows and everything. Than I would have 4 roll up windows with nice trim around them just like a convert. If I didnt have the means to acheive that ,I would happily drive a chopped or unchopped 4 door.

The FrenZ, just get things straight, many cars in the 40´s and 50´s that were modified with Carson tops was convertibles not 4-dr rebuilt to 2-dr. And I don't buy the reason to not build a Carson top just because it unusual.

I like your comments because you give your version and comes with alternative ideas. I haven't decided yet what to do next winter and the first job will be to modify the rear end. Unlike the picture that you posted from e-bay my Olds is a S88 and has different styling to the rear fenders and it's shorter.

    See similar car:

Kartsa's ex-Packard is one of my all-time-favourite customs with a carson-style top! Really works also with the panoramic screen. Rikster, thanks for picture.

  14. Now that is a carson top! That work looks great I have seen a couple like that but most of them I have seen are covered with hard board and then gl***ed and s***ched they have be like a ton! Is yours going to pop off?

    Josh

  15. Thanks Josh, Yes the top is going to be removeable.
