are they available? I know plates are available for the front and the rear. but I couldnt find any for the mid section. (which is what I really want to box) anyone know where I can buy them? or should I just go buy some plate and make them myself?
You might want to check with Hotroddrummer from Ionia Rod Shop. He is out in California right now with the roadster At the GNRS so maybe pm him, He'll probably be checking in on the HAMB
You can make them yourself out of some 11 gauge cold rolled steel. A trick I figured out to make templates for boxing plates is it get some stiff non-corrugated cardboard (something like posterboard), and hold it flat against the inside face of the frame rail against the top and bottom lip of the C-channel. Then get a small hammer and tap the cardboard against the lips of the C-channel (without moving the cardboard) all the way down the length. When you look at the backside of the cardboard, you can see an impression of the lips of the C-channel. Then you just get some big scissors and cut it out on the inside of the line and trim it until it fits just right. If you can't make the boxing plates in one piece, you can drill some ~3/8" holes through the boxing plate pieces on both sides of the seam, and back up the seam with a backing plate. You plug weld the backing plate behind the holes on one piece (weld through the holes with rosette welds) and then that gives you a lip to hold the next boxing plate against, and you can then **** weld the seam and do the rosette welds on the other side of the seam to tie everything together. Grind the edges that make up the **** weld seam so they form a V-shape where they meet and leave a little gap so you get good penetration.
Does one need to box the whole frame front to back?I just brought a 40 pu home and thought I'd do the front and back...The truck has a mild 302 auto and I plan to freshen up and use.The frame is in nice shape, straight and no stress cracks any where.Does the whole frame need to be boxed?
couple good ideas right there. don't know of anyone making them Jeff..you should make them up and sell em!
Hello from what I have read the stock frames are pretty stout unless your running some serious motor that's just bleeding with power you would probably get by doing the front and back with your setup. If the future you'll be running more motor or dog on it often I would recommend doing the whole rail the extra insurance never hurt. the boxing plates I have ran across are from a company called lucky 7 enterprises you can order through summit racing by section to reduce shipping or as a whole boxing plate... decent prices if you ask me. As for me I am currently in the process of preparing my 41 ford pu frame for boxing plates I am doing full rail my 351w will hopefully produce over 500 hp/ tq range I hope this helps
And you can also order direct from them as well they have lots of goodies for the 35-40 41 ch***is don't know the quality also there is this " mom and pop shop I ran across on the net may want to check them out it's progressive automotive Inc they have a boxing plate how to for the 35-40 ch***is gives some insight... Their workmanship looks good but just tossing those out there the info the others posted is good stuff good luck
