Just bought a 49 Ford Businessman's Coupe with a 302 and C4 transmission. I'm having issues with the way the transmission sits a little low and there is quite an angle between the driveline and the the transmission. Creates alot of vibration and some leakage. Because of this angle the drive line does not insert completely and seems as though it is not long enough I've been told that in order to raise the transmission enough to get everything level and aligned, I would have to cut a hole in the floor and then custom fab a plate to fit over it. Once this is done the drive line would be long enough. Has anyone had this issue or something similar, I'm trying to avoid cutting anything apart here.
No but I sure remember some good times in the back of a '49 Business Coupe with the flat raised floor.
Read the "Sticky," do an intro, then let's get to your problem. More info/pics on motor mounts, steering, header, radiator clearance, etc would help. This isn't an unusual swap; chances are you're going to have to cut/fab the floorboard and make/buy a trans mount. You may still have to go with a longer or modified driveshaft. While you're at it, replace the rear seal in the tail of the C4. BTW, welcome from New Mexico!
Yep, after posting your intro post some photo of the engine sitting in the car. The surface that the carb sits on wants to set perfectly level if all things are right in the 302 in the Shoebox world. Figuring out how to get it level or get the trans output shaft more level will take photos and a bit of collaboration.
These cars have a very small transmission hump do to being stick shift cars. Done a few of them always had to build a new trans cover. To raise the trans high enough.
Cutting and building a new transmission cover is pretty standard fair in most conversions and certainly so in the shoebox.
