Got a set of roller rockers on my 302 and a nice set of vintage cal custom valve covers. Do I need tall covers or will these work? If I need talls - what height spacers can I fab to run the Cal Customs 3/8? Thanks
I am using crane roller rockers in my SBF with two cork gaskets under the finned valve covers, no hitting once I reformed the baffles under the oil fill caps. No leaks either. Before you get into expensive stuff try two gaskets and put the covers on without screws and turn the motor over see it they hit.
What Oldspeed said - I use Erson rollers in my SBF & only had to remove the oil baffle under the cap. If you use 2 corks, use something like 3M weatherstrip adhesive (aka Gorilla Snot) to glue them together. I like to use something non-hardening like Permatex #2 to glue the cork to the covers & then just put grease on the cork-to-head side for reusable gaskets...
just remember you can not run regular rockers on that engine because they knock the retainers off the valve stem!
I'm running 60's Cal-Customs (40-1017) with Harmon/Collins rockers on Trik-Flow heads. I believe the valve cover boss is slightly raised over stock....in any case, mine does not hit.
You talking about rail rockers? Fords designed for rail rockers can run either rail or non-rail rockers. The ones designed for the non-rail rockers shouldn't run the rail rockers. Plenty of confusion on this topic & subsequent valve jobs may have altered it so nothing is the same...
LC: I just put roller rockers on my 302. I put a set of the finned "COBRA" covers over the top with a laser-cut steel spacer between two gaskets. Would be close to 3/8ths thick (the spacer) with a gasket (rubber, not cork) each side. Didn't need to remove any baffles (PCV or filler) that way. Of course, you need someone to lasercut some steel....I've got the DXF Autocad file if you want it though.
