Thats a cool video. The car still retains some exterior rust, but its innards have been updated. That car ran as late as 1966 or so. It ran at Irwindale a few times in that time frame, but my only observation of it was it sitting atop its trailer in the pits. Seeing resurected racers like that makes me wonder what would it have taken-money being no issue-to get something like the Spruce Goose flight ready and find a pilot with a "big pair" to really fly that mutha.

  8. I'm guessing anyone with a big enough "pair" to get in the 15oz coupe, and attempt a run today, would be over qualified to fly the goose! ;)

  11. HAMBer PVTA JAY worked the Pomona strip for the Pomona Valley Timing Association in the '60's. He snapped this shot of my RPU on the line in May of '63.

  12. Jay snapped this shot on the return road heading back to the pits. Jay brought me these pictures today. It means a lot to me that he saw my posts on the HAMB, and searched me out to give me pictures he's had for 48 years. Thanks Jay!!

Dean, What a deal!!! I'm happy for you.
I have very few photos of my Cupit & Cunningham AA/FD from 65-66. I KNOW lotsa photos were taken, but as you say, no one knows how to contact us?
PLUS . . . we're gettin' so old that there's only a few guys left who took those photos!!
I have this same car as a cackle car and will again be at Bowling Green NHRR next June.
Some old photos (and a couple of current ones of same car 45 years later) Sorry, these are not all in motion.<GRIN>
Best Regards, Glenn - in Louisiana (73 fuckin' years old!)

Dean, I was more than happy to leave you those pictures. It was great visiting with you, just hope I didn't make you too late for your appt.

  28. That is a cigarette alright, but it's not my hand. The driver that day was Hugh "Putzel" Osterman. He was a buddy of Don Nicholson's and drove the roadster for a short time in '63 when I was recovering from my El Mirage crash. We all gave Putzel a hard time about the smoking, and he should have listened. He died about 7 years ago of cancer. RIP

And yes Jay, I was late for PT, but it didn't matter. They still worked my butt off with smiles on their faces.

What made this car especially noteworthy was that it was all steel. Had been since debut in 61 or so. Depsite its girth, the Thurmond boys put this car in the winner circle once or twice against much lighter cars. They got rid of it by the end of 1970, built a funnycar which crashed on its maiden voyage. No more racing.

One of the best looking top gas cars ever. And competetive too.
