Cant find anything on this, I am installing my clutch fork shaft backwards so that I can put the slave on the p***enger side to open up room on the drivers side. I was told to "just remove the starter cover" it has a ridge on the outside of the bellhousing so it looks like you would have to drive it towards the rear but there is also a flare on the inside of the bellhousing holding it in. Is this something that can be done and also able to put back? It looks like I would have to put a piece of wood in the starter cover and pound it towards the rear of the car, does this work or just F things up? Have any of you guys done this backwards thing? I bought a fork shaft for the early flatheads that do not have the flat "tab" on the end to bolt the clutch rod to, Its just a round shaft, I am having a problem finding a tube that fits snug over it. I want to build an arm for the slave to push but every pipe I try over it is too loose, slopy if you will. Any ideas?
If you have the engine out and accessibile, try grinding that "flare" out of the inside THEN drive it toward the rear with a piece of wood. The ridge around the outside was a "stop" for ***embly purposes. The flare was done after ***embly. When you get done, smear some J-B Weld on it and drive it back in-to the stop.
Thanks Dale, The reason I was wanting to remove the starter housing was to insert the original clutch fork shaft in from the p***enger side. I was hoping the housing would be removable so I can pull the shaft when needed. If I jb weld it back on my shaft would be in for good. Thought about using the original shaft because it has the flat tab on the end to bolt an arm to. Having a hard time finding something that slides over the shaft to make an arm.
