Bellflower style--no skirts?

In looking at a ton of bellflower-style cars lately, I noticed that many of them don't have skirts. Is this a traditional part of the style? Is it to show off the wheels more? It seems incongruous with lowering the car (which seems to be a pretty consistent bellflower trait) as the skirts usually make the car seem lower. Any thoughts?

No skirts on a Bellflower car! Unless it's a 'Bomba' ('37-'54) chevy, with visors.. etc. Skirts were a "East coast' thing. The exposed rear wheels, showed the lowering, in relation to the wheels better..I might be wrong, but hey I grew up in "The Valley". I never really liked skirts anyways,at least on cars:D Sparky

    Skirts are for transves***es... ;)

Skirts started fading from popularity when expensive custom wheels started making the scene.

Car magazines started having "how to open up andflare your rear wheel openings" articles in the early-mid 50's.

I really don't like skirts on cars with factory flared wheel openings like '55-'64 Chevys, and I don't care if the factory sold them or not. They sold them because the aftermarket would have sold them anyway and they wanted the extra dollars, they same way they sell bolt on spoilers and "body kits" today. Still doesn't make them look "right".

Skirts were definately not a part of the Bellflower style. The cars were severely lowered, but by the mid-sixties skirts were all but forgotten on kustoms. People were trending towards the open wheel look more and more. Then the next phase was seeing fenderwells opening up and flaring...
Congrats on the Horse feature by the way... I am also a big fan of your Trump too.

It's official--I am "lowering the skirt," so to speak, on my caddy. Next is to get the roof metalflaked.

Thanks for the bike props. Wait 'til you see the triumph after I'm done re-doing it--it will be less thrown together, much more sixties-style slick. And it will have super tall risers with super bars. I'll post pics on the JAMB when I get it completely mocked up in bare metal.

  7. now your talking Nutz.. sounds like your on the right track. Just remember subltle is always better with 60's bellflower cars.
