im runnin a stock small block distributor with a petronix ignition . and i keep burning up coils and dont know why . strating is hesatent and avenualy it wont start at all . once i put in a new coil im good for awhile but then it happens all over again . last coil i put in was kansas in july.

  2. Alex, is there ANY chance your wiring is allowing current to pass into the coil when the engine is not running?

I have the same set up and the same issue. Sometimes my ignition cuts out while driving too.

Most Pertronix dizzys require a 6 ohm coil. If you are useing 6 ohm coils and still burning them up, make sure the coil is away from heat as much as you can..in my experience, they don't like it.

Also, if you leave the key on for an extended amount of time without the engine running, they don't like that either.

I am not going to bash Pertronix products, because I know most folks have great luck with them, but I have not had very good success with thier stuff....Maybe it is just me..

    Good luck, -Abone.

Internal/ external resistor or incorrect ohms for application... sounds like its boiling to death

    Engine grounded to the body?

  10. If the coil gets real hot while you are driving, there is a resistance problem. I wish i could tell you what it was...haven't dealt with that stuff for years. I think flamedabone may be on to something with it being the right coil for the pertronix...

I do not know just what set up you have or how it is wired, and I know you build a lot of cars, but
old school learning. the hard way from lots of years and lots of years past, with the particulars given in this posting, My immediate suspicion would be that you are running 12 volt thru the coil without a resistor. and that will burn up a coil with just about the exact symptoms you describe. Probably wrong, but .....

You may need to install a ballast resistor.

PM GMC Bubba he is the best. try a resistor between power and coil.

Na ya dont wanna do that. Chances are you are running a coil that requires a resister. Perttonix does not. Get yer hands on a proper coil.

We burned up a couple of new coils in my Kids rpu before I called Mallory. They told me there was a coil for points and one for electronic ignition, we were using the wrong one. Since changing it the new one didn't get burning hot like the other two and was still working fine when we pulled the motor for a rebuild.

right know there is an external restied coil and useing the balest resister

im gona go and try to get a 6 om ciol

  19. NOT sure where you got that info, but it is W R O N G!!!

We (PerTronix) don't call out for a 6 ohm coil in any instance.

    GAMBINO

It depends on which of our modules you have in that Chevy dist and 6 or 12 volts.
If it is a V8 with the original Ignitor (which is Black) and 12 v, run a 1.5 ohm coil, no ballast resistor.
If it is a V8 and the Ignitor II (which is Red) and 12 v use a .6 ohm coil (NOT 6 OHM)

If it is something other than this, post your combination and I will answer.

You responded quicker than I did. This is the same info I follow wiring in a pertronix.

isn't there an issue with certain coils being mounted on their side instead of straight up and down?

  24. I believe most 60's Ford stock coils are 1.5 ohm (or close enough) like from a Mustang. Check the resistance between the + and - terminals with a simple ohm meter.

pm hotroddon on the board, he works there.
pertronix take a full 12 volts all the time, make sure your running 12 volts after start up and not a resited 8 volts.
the new modules have fixes for the key on deal.

Absolutely, just ask the guy that spent the night by the side of I8 just east of Dateland AZ. Never heard of it? There is a reason!

alex why not get the gen II pertronix, it has an auto shut off just in case you leave the key on.

If it is a V8 with the original Ignitor (which is Black) and 12 v, run a 1.5 ohm coil, no ballast resistor. so is that an internaly resisted ciol?
