Does anybody have a scan of PDF of the rebuild/adjustment of a 1932 Ford steering box, I have stripped mine down and now need to put it make together again. I would also like to know how to get the column (with the worm gear attached) out of the car as I am really struggling to see how it comes out. The hole in the Firewall is too small to bring the column upwards and the bracket that attaches the column to the inside of the firewall is too big to drop the column downwards. I am in the UK, but the car, a T Bucket, was built in the States.
if you can get to the plate on the side of the box, there should be 4 bolts and an adjusting screw, remove the 4 bolts and slide the sector gear out far enough to remove the worm gear and shaft, sometimes you have to turn adjuster screw in a little to get the plate to move, re***emble in reverse order and adjust accordingly
Loosen the clamp at the steering box the holds the column to the box. Pull the column up off the box and out of the way and get the box out the bottom. The adjustment of these boxes is the most demanding thing you may ever do. The mesh adjustment is extreamly sensitive and the centering adjustment changes the mesh ajustment so you are chasing your tail. Get the 32 service bulletin book and read the steering box part many times.
Thanks for the replies, do you know where I can get the service manual you speak off, I think I may need it! With regard to the steering box/column removal, I have the box off but I can't see any way the outer column comes away from the inner. The top of the box (lid with 4 bolts) is too big to go through the firewall and the welded bracket on the inside is also too big to go through the firewall hole. I have attached a couple of pictures which might make it easier to understand. Cheers in advance!
Take the wheel and adapter off and pull the shaft out the bottom. Mac's would have the 32 sevice bulletin book.
Cheers for the Macs tip I have now had a look on their site I think a small package will be making it's way to Steeple Bumpstead. Do you mean the taper adapter that the steering wheel bolts up against I have noticed it ha two holes for a small C spanner
Yep, Get that adapter off and your shaft will fall out. Edit. The key in the end of the shaft may hang up in the bearings. You need to pop it out.

I have never seen that before. I suspect it is not threaded. just pressed on. Measure the shaft to see if it has been cut down and threaded. It was 3/4" when new. If it is still 3/4" next to the collar, then it is probably pressed on. I would try a little force to see if it will slip apart. Are there screw driver slots in the bottom of the two little holes? Maybe it has some sort of internal clamp set up if so.
