    HELP,

When converting 6 to 12 volt on a 50 ford the starter ****on is grounded to the dash. How do you stop this? I do not want to put an after market ****on on as it will reflect on the dash. I would like it to look stock inside the car.

    thanks

You need a insulated base 12V solinoid . Cole hersey makes them. I don't have a electrical auto parts buyers guide or I probably could give you a number that would work at the FLAP store. Or use a relay.

As noted above, you need a 12 volt neg ground solenoid, which are very common and just about any post-1956 Ford solenoid will do. The old solenoid was triggered from ground (hence the one wire), the new one will be triggered by positive voltage, meaning it needs to be fed by a positive source coming from the starter ****on.

You'll also have to replace the starter ****on with a pole switch and run power to it, with the other leg running to the solenoid.

Can you run the two-wire solenoid "hot" and use the original starter ****on to complete the circuit to earth?

Ron Francis sells a two wire starter ****on that looks real close to original. You will have to enlarge hole in dash just a little for it to fit.

Use a solenoid for a Western Ultra or Uni-mount snow plow, it uses ground to trigger it like the original.

I second this suggestion. Is is exactly what I used; it's simpler and very similar to the original.

Which solenoid are you using in your diagram? Might help to know these things.

The other thing you can do is simply leave the 6V starter relay installed. It will work just fine on 12V as it's momentary duty and not a continuous duty item. No changes required.

Or, you can do as above and find the tractor starter relay that can be back-ordered, or wire in a relay, or replace the starter ****on with a two-wire ****on.

Of the four options, I prefer simply using the original 6V starter relay - many of them have a manual ****on on the bottom so you can bump the engine over from under the hood...
