Hello, Being from the UK, finding parts for my '62 Monterey is proving to be quite tricky. I understand that it does in fact share many parts with the Galaxie, but was wondering if this is only the case for this year? The particular part i'm looking for is the lower rear windshield trim moulding. Would this part be shared on any other Mercs/Fords of the same or different years? Galaxies are much more common over here ;-) Any help would be great, thanks. Dan
If I remember correctly, all the windshield trim moulding should be the same as the corresponding Galaxie. I know for a fact that the windshields, cowls, and roofs are the same. I too have a '62 Monterey, so I know how much fun it can be to find some of the odd parts. On the bright side, all the ch***is components (with the exception of the Anti-Harsh front suspension, if you even have it) are the same as the '61-'64 Galaxies. That makes finding parts a little easier. Good Luck.
So, with the front end, how can i tell if it has the "anti harsh" setup? And if it does have it, then can i use a regular front end rebuild kit to replace the main balljoints and bushings etc?
The Anti-Harsh Front suspension was used on '62 and '63 Full Size Mercs (not all, but most). Basically the front inside bushing on the lower A-arm was replaced with a large oval shaped bushing and linkage setup that allowed the corner of the lower control arm to move inboard-outboard as will as pivot. Ford took the Galaxie control arms, loped off the front inside bushing, and then riveted a modified corner on that had the oval bushing. The standard suspension did not have this rivet part, and the lower A-Arm was all one stamping. Here is a quick pic of my front suspensions so you can see the riveted lower A-arm. Compare that to a picture from the web of standard Galaxie front suspension with a standard lower a-arm. Please note that both of these suspensions have the rack and pinion modification done to them. The bushings are available for the Anit-Harsh suspension from Kanter, but they are a few hundred dollars more (even more in the UK I imagine) then the standard Galaxie bushings. To save some money, I machined a couple of steel slugs that I welded into the oval bushing openings and pressed the standard Galaxie bushings into the slugs.
Thank you so much for this! I do indeed have the riveted arm set up, fortunately the bushings on this part all look to be ok so hopefully will just need to replace ball joints and stabiliser bar etc. $500 for the kit from Kanter!!!!
