Anyone MAKE their own shorty muffler?

I've been thinking about making a REAL short set of mufflers, or at least something just to take the edge off a straight pipe setup. I've only got about 10", maybe a little less, to work with, and couldn't find anything "off the shelf" that short, but I have some decent offset width under the body. So I've been thinking of making a simple chambered muffler, or something. Nothing fancy or tuned, just to quite it down a bit. If I wanna' make noise I'll un-cork it at the headers.

Anyone make their own? Anything you can share, maybe an article or something?

    Thanks!

Maybe a scaled down version of something like this??

I've got about 4" of total height to work with, a length of figure about 9-1/2" and a space about 10" side to side. Pipes are 2", so I really don't want whatever I make to be too restrictive.

Nope! Too long. :( Can't be longer than 9-1/2".

    (insert joke here)

But I have an area to one side of the exhaust that would give me some volume.

Take a gl*** pack and shorten it in a chop saw and weld back together. It will take some crack out of it. Try to find the old style gl***packs that are larger diameter for best results.

What about some kind of insert or baffle?

Check local Fleet Farm or ag supply website. Tractor mufflers are compact and loud!

If I used an insert or baffle it would be restrictive. With 2" exhaust pipes I'm restricted as-is.

I made a punch to baffle some pipe, then wrapped in copper wool for each pipe on my headers. I don't see why you couldn't do that with larger pipe. The baffles alone helped a lot without the wool.

So I could essentially make a 9" section of that perforated tube of the same size and then essentially weld a chamber of some volume around it? Pretty cool!

Here's a REALLY quick sketch of the area I have to work with...

So maybe something like this, with or without steel or copper stuffing? Will I have a volume difference with a larger chamber or is it really going to make that much of a difference?? Would baffles inside the chamber do anything for me??

Since exhaust gas actually travels on the outside walls of the pipe, I think if you were to reduce the chamber size so that you have more of a straight through type muffler with evenish air space on both sides of your baffle you would be better off.

Good point. Maybe just surround it with a 4" diameter, thin walled tube and stuff it full of steel or copper.

Here's what appears to be an oval gl*** pack... Ricer stuff I'm guessing.

Could you put some HD 12 in shorties right at the exit of your pipes?

That might just do it right there!!!! I never knew they sold those! 8 inches long and 4" tall and available with offset inlet! I may not have to make something after all... Although... That looks like a pretty easy construction... HMMMM....:D

Yeah, interesting... Wonder what that little guy sounds like? Anyone running these? I wonder if a tiny single-chambered muffler would sound sort of weird compared to something like that little gl*** pack.

The last time I looked for all this stuff was towards the end of last year. Either I missed a TON, or some of this stuff is new.:eek: I'm sure I just didn't see all these options...

Is there room for 'chambered' mufflers? They're only a bit bigger in diameter than exhaust pipe and available in many different lengths. They're crimped from the outside, very similar to what's inside Corvette sidepipes.

I think those cherrybombs or the flowmaster are probably the way to go, and if it were between the two I would try the cherrybombs first.

  28. be sure to have a slip joint or allow your tube to float as it will expand and break if solid on both ends:eek:
i have a hydraulic machine to stamp the louvers, but it cost more than your punch
i am going to do working sidepipes and tailpipes on one or 2 cars if i can get clearances to run the pipes so i want to make a short muffler too

I have been thinking on getting the American Hydraulics domer out of the grainery and taking it to town, but am kinda unsure about getting it out the door its heavy sold all my other equip i dont know how short it will go they are really nice to form the ends just crimps the tube inside

i kept a pailfull of louvered tubes, you could go to 2 1/4 " if you want to have 2 in in and out and not lose so much flow

  29. My poor man's "mufflers" were built using round stock, welded washers every few inches, and nut tack welded for the set screw. A few hours and two bucks in materials. I will chop up a gl*** pack next time to get the best sound.
